Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit ecumenical Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty and homelessness from the world by supplying decent, simple, affordable housing to families in need. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need. Fall 2011

What Are Our International Roots? :

In 1942 Clarence Jordan came to know Koinonia Farms in Americus, Georgia In the 70’s, Miller Fuller and his wife Linda gave away their fortune and became missionaries in Africa Together they expanded their vision and in 1976 organized and founded Habitat for Humanity Fall 2011

6 Mitchell-Yancey Habitat for Humanity envisions the development of a small neighborhood in each county where a Habitat house is constructed each year using green technologies and practices. Fall 2011 What is our 5-Year Vision?

8 What is our need here? Fall 2011 More than 40 % of North Carolina renters must spend more than 30 % of their income on rent to afford even the most basic unit. A family making a minimum hourly wage ($7.25) would need to work 100 hours a week and spend over 30% of their income to afford a 2 bedroom rental. Often these rentals would be considered substandard.

What is the social need for Habitat? : 

9 What is the social need for Habitat? 1 in 6 Americans are in need of a decent, affordable place to live Inadequate housing creates significant problems for families and behavioral problems for children Owning a home has a significant impact on children’s quality of life, educational achievement and their likelihood of adult employment Home ownership increases intergenerational wealth Owner-occupied housing impacts the tax revenues, growth of businesses & jobs, life satisfaction of citizens, and participation in community problem-solving Fall 2011

What does it cost to build a Habitat home? : 

10 What does it cost to build a Habitat home? The construction cost in 2011-12 will range from $75,000 - $100,000 Number of bedrooms and square footage are based on family size and need It takes approximately 12 months to build a house Fall 2011

Pay monthly utilities and escrow property taxes What responsibilities do partner families have? Habitat does not give away free houses nor make a profit! Fall 2011

Funding Proposal Become a major sponsor for the 1st Mitchell-Yancey Habitat for Humanity “green” home in Yancey County Fund increased costs (15-20%) to improve “green” technologies and construction practices in the next Habitat home built in Yancey County in 2012 Fall 2011 23
