History of the University: 

History of the University In the early 19th century, a group of prominent New York residents from the class of merchants, bankers, and traders established the university on April 18, 1831. These people believed the city needed a university designed for young men who would be admitted based on merit, not social class. In 1832, NYU held its first classes in rented rooms in four-story Clinton Hall, situated near City Hall. Finally the university was situated in the Greenwich Village, a section of Manhattan. One of the men who did this possible was Albert Gallatin, secretary of Treasury under Thomas Jefferson.

NYU Violets is the name of the sports teams and other competitive teams at New York University. The main colors are white and violet and the school mascot is a bobcat. Sports are separated in groups of men and women.
