COLLAPSE OF BUILDING :

COLLAPSE OF BUILDING PRESENTED BY S. VINOTH KUMAR, IST YEAR, B.E (CIVIL), ROLL NO: 09CE36

INTRODUCTION :

INTRODUCTION Shelter is one of the major necessity of the people. Shelter comes under Building constructions Building, like all constructions are designed to support certain loads without deforming excessively. Those Building constructions should be safe and protective.

CAUSES FOR THE COLLAPSE OF THE BUILDING :

CAUSES FOR THE COLLAPSE OF THE BUILDING Bad design Faulty Construction Foundation failure Extraordinary Loads Unexpected Failure Modes Combination of Causes

BAD FOUNDATION Even an excellently designed structure will not stand on a bad foundation.Though the structure will carry its loads, the earth beneath may not The displacements due to bad foundations may alter the stress distribution :

BAD DESIGN :

BAD DESIGN It not means error of computation. It’s a failure to take into account the loads, the structure will be called upon to carry. Engineer is responsible for this failure which are created at the drawing board.

EXTRAORDINARY LOADS :

EXTRAORDINARY LOADS May be natural such as snowfalls, earthquake or winds of hurricane A flimsy flexible structure may avoid destruction in an earthquake

FAULTY CONSTRUCTION :

FAULTY CONSTRUCTION Most important cause of structure failure. Engineer is also fault here due to lack of inspection. It includes use of salty sand, substitution of inferior steel for that specified, bad reverting, bad welds etc.,

UNEXPECTED FAILURE MODES :

UNEXPECTED FAILURE MODES Most complex reason for collapse. Suspension bridges seemed the answer to bridging large gaps. Ex: Ellet’s Bridge.

BUCKLING EFFECT :

BUCKLING EFFECT It occurs mainly when the tensile strength of the building becomes too high. [Crossing the given limit]. Occurs mainly in the columns if it is short and squat. Column bends outward and the load crushes to earth.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES :

PREVENTIVE MEASURES Employing a good design. Avoiding faulty constructions. Preventing the foundation failure. Avoiding too much of loads. Engineer should take care of the above actions. Proper visiting of the site may help to some extent.

CONCLUSION :

CONCLUSION Architects and engineers are among the most fortunate of men since they build their own monuments with public consent, public approval and often public money. The Road to success is always under construction Get it Right….. Civil Engineers
