ANTIMATTER has the same mass but its electrical charges are reversed They are, literally, the mirror images of matter. ORIGIN : ORIGIN In 1930, Paul Dirac discovered that the antimatter should exist. In i932, Carl Anderson, discovered positron In 1950, physicists at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory used the Bevatron accelerator to produce the antimatter NOTATION : NOTATION Antimatter is denoted by adding a bar over the particle’s symbol. Another convention is to distinguish particles by their electric charges. Eg: electron is e- positron is e+ PRODUCTION : PRODUCTION Antimatter is produced in radioactive decays. When C-14 decays antineutrino is produced In high energy particle colliders called “atom-smashers”antiparticles are seperated out from the magnetic field. ENERGY : ENERGY Antimatter is a fuel source that produces huge amounts energy. 1 gram of antimatter can heat 1 kg of water to a temperature of about 20,000 times the temperature of the core of the sun. Energy is mainly due to annihilation of matter and antimatter. ANTIMATTER EXPLOSION : ANTIMATTER EXPLOSION When antimatter comes into contact with normal matter, these equal and opposite charges collide to produce an explosion emitting pure radiations. Scientists believe that this energy is more powerful than any that can be generated by other propulsion systems. ANTIMATTER PROPULSION : ANTIMATTER PROPULSION Antimatter catalysed nuclear pulse propulsion is a variation of nuclear pulse propulsion based upon the injection of antimatter into a mass of nuclear fuel. Since energy released by a fuel is high it is more efficient than conventional fuels. ADVANTAGES : ADVANTAGES FUEL: 100 percent of the mass and antimatter is converted into energy which can be used as fuel. MEDICINE: It is used in positron emission tomography.
