PowerPoint Presentation: Purpose: In order to accurately identify species of mushrooms with the goal of benefiting from their natural beneficial properties the novice mushroom hunter must collect and attempt to determine the species of mushroom that they have in their possession. After attempting such identification it is typical to refer to an expert to confirm this identification. While in this learning process it would be useful to catalog the found species in order to aid in such identification. Since an incorrect identification can lead to unwanted results, including, but not limited to, failed ink extraction and material dying, poisoning, sever gastrointestinal distress, hallucination, even death, the proper identification of mushroom species is crucial to their continued scholarship and use. This database will aid in the dissemination and use during this learning process.
PowerPoint Presentation: This database uses an encyclopedic type table called “Mushrooms” to compare specimens to. Each specimen is linked to a transaction table that logs each “Discovery” to a “Location”. The encyclopedia of mushroom is similar to a field guide in the types of information that it contains, but can be further utilized both by using a sorting type function and a categorical type function. Decision trees will be added in the future to further aid in this process for identification. The Discovery table is used to catalog discovery occurrences and to ultimately improve the information and value of the Mushroom table. Each Discovery is made in a location which details specific information about the location in which the species is found, allowing researchers to both track the migration, proliferation, and health of that species, in addition to identifying sources for that species.
PowerPoint Presentation: Answer to the question “What is the scientific name, common names, odor and habitat of Pluteus cervinus ?”
PowerPoint Presentation: Answer to the question “Which mushrooms have been found at Rattlesnake Ridge/Mountain?”
PowerPoint Presentation: Answer to the question “What time of year and what type of situation have Gymnopus peronatus been found?”
PowerPoint Presentation: This database has a lot of promise in its future. Once it properly incorporates the photo views of each mushroom from the encyclopedia and can link to the photos of each discovery it will be well on the way to being a useful tool in which to find out information about local mushrooms. I hope to incorporate a map-finding feature and a comprehensive uses table into it as well. Thanks for viewing!
