Expectations :Expectations Work hard. Demonstrate a positive attitude. Keep an open mind. Don’t settle for average – ever. Communicate concerns/problems with me. Try to solve a problem on your own before you ask for help from someone else. You can expect these things from me as well.


Supplies :Supplies Binder College-ruled notebook paper Dividers w/ pockets Flash Drive (Jump Drive) Basic “art” supplies – markers, colored pencils, glue stick, etc. Novels – English (Go ahead and get Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther for English, most of the others will be provided to you!)


Book Purchase Deadline :Book Purchase Deadline Purchase Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther by Thursday, August 21st That gives you 2 weeks to get your book. You will receive 100 points for having your book by the deadline.


Rules :Rules Come to class prepared. Listen the first time. Respect others and their property. Be responsible. Be resourceful. You can expect me to follow these rules as well.


Grading :Grading Traditional grading scale is used. (A-F) Tests – 200 points Quizzes – 100 points or less Lecture Notes – 100 points (history) Projects – Points vary Activities – 25 points and up Discussion Blogs – 30 points and up Vocabulary/Spelling tests – 100 points

Wikispaces – Our Hub :Wikispaces – Our Hub We will use our class wikispaces almost everyday. You need to become familiar with the web site, how it works, and register a username and password. (I will keep a copy of these, since many students forget them.) Summer Reading :Summer Reading Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury)In a society where firefighters burn books instead of fighting fires, Guy Montag begins to question the life he leads and the contents of the books he burns. He begins reading and finds there are others like him. Deception Point (Dan Brown)An excellent thriller. When a NASA satellite discovers a rare object buried deep in the Arctic Ice, the space agency needs an intelligence analyst to verify it. This is a big believable story unfolding at breakneck pace. A Farewell to Arms (Ernest Hemingway)The best American novel to emerge from World War I. It is an unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Catch-22 (Joseph Heller) a satirical, historical novel first published in 1961. The novel, set during the later stages of World War II from 1943 onwards, is frequently cited as one of the great literary works of the Twentieth century. Catch-22 is a term coined by Heller, describing a false dilemma, where no real choice exists. If you like satires, you'll enjoy this one. Test on your choice is Friday, August 8th.

History :History Interactive Lecture is the basic format of the class. Our wiki houses most of what we do. Note taking is very important. Your notes will be handed in the day of tests and will count 100 points. A variety of other learning tools are used in history: webquests, games, blogs, foldables, research projects, videos, and other things.


History continued :History continued We will continue studying the history of the United States in the 11th grade. The focus for your history class last year was to expose you to the most important topics covered on the AHSGE. Thus, you studied content through the 1960s. Our focus this year is to take that content to a new level of understanding and depth. Whys and what ifs are my favorites. We will begin in the Imperialist Age of the late 1800s and forge through to the present.
