Facts About Santa Cruz Santa Cruz is the 12 th mission It was founded on August 28, 1791/ by Father Fermin Lasuen It is also named for the Sacred Cross It was located on Mission Hill over looking the city of Santa Cruz on the North shore of Moteray Bay.

History of Missoin Santa Cruz In 1492, after Christopher Culumbus brought back news of what he called the New World. The Spanish government really wanted to explore the land further. They were looking forward to find riches and cities to conquer. They also were hopping for a short cut to Asia. In 1519 there was a soldier named Hernando Cortez. He brought ships and other sources. In 1542, Viceroy Mendoza sent another explorer named Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo is up the C.A. coast in search of a river that goes through North America to Asia. There was not a shortcut, but he found a harbor that is now San Diego Bay. Then he returned with information. There was not enough riches so they would not go there for 160 years.
