History of Mission San Francisco de Asis My mission is better known as mission Dolores. It was discovered by Gasper de Portal’s expedition to Monterey Bay. IT was seen as an important base for Spaniards. More than 5,000 Native Americans died from measles epidemic. Since so many Native Americans were getting sick they opened up a hospital in San Rafael .Later it became San Rafael Arcangel.
