O rigins The Ultimate Fighting Championship is the worlds largest MMA promotion company in the world. The sport mixed martial arts (MMA) itself has roots from the Greek Olympic sport known as Pankration Like in Pankration, UFC competitors are allowed to fight either striking methods or grappling techniques

O rigins Origins The Ultimate Fighting Championship was inspired by the Brazilian fighting tournaments known as vale tudo . In 1993 Rorion Gracie, of the legendary Gracie family, introduced vale tudo to the American market. In 1993 Rorion founded the UFC

O rigins What once stared as underground fighting, has now emerged as the world quickest growing sport The UFC is now broadcasted in over 130 countries There have been events held in Canada, Germany, the U.K, Australia, United Arab Emirates and all but three states in the United States. the UFC has already broken the pay-per-view industry's all-time records for a single year of business, generating over $222,766,000 in revenue in 2006.

Rules of the Octagon In early UFC fight competitors were allowed to wear almost any attire. Now fighters must wear approved shorts, and cannot wear shoes or long pants Fighters must also wear approved light-weight open-fingered gloves, that include at least 1" of padding around the knuckles. These gloves reduce the risk of breaking your hand while allowing the fighter to grab and grapple.

Rules of the Octagon To ensure the safety of the fighters, rules are implied Violation of these rules will result in warning, deduction of points and even disqualification. The following are some of what fighters cannot do: butting with the head, eye gouging, biting, hair pulling, fish hooking, attack to the groin or back of the head, Putting a finger into any orifice or into any cut or laceration on an opponent, small joint manipulation, Striking downward using the point of the elbow, and kicking the head of a grounded opponent .

Rules of the Octagon The duration of a bout is 3 five minute rounds for a standard fight and 5 five minute rounds for a championship bout. The fighter wins the fight via submission, knockout, technical knockout or by the judges decision. A submission is when fighter clearly taps on the mat or his opponent or verbally submits. A knockout is when fighter is put into a state of unconsciousness resulting from any legal strike. A technical knockout occurs when referee decides a fighter cannot continue either because fighter is unable to intelligently defend himself; ring side doctor decides that it is unsafe for the fighter to continue the bout due to excessive bleeding or physical injuries; or because the fighter's own cornerman signals defeat for their own fighter If the fighters run out of time the judges decide who the winner is and can even decide if it’s a draw.

Fighting Styles In the UFC there is great diversity in fighting styles. There are six disciplines that are the most common. In the striking aspect Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai are the most common styles of fighting In the grappling aspect wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo are the most prevalent.
