CONCEPT OF HEALTH EDUCATION Concept of Health: The word health is derived from Hal, which mean “ hale ( strong, healthy), sound ( body, family and environment), whole.” Hahn and Payne describe health in terms of six interacting and dynamic dimensions- physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual and occupation. Simply the word “ health” means safe and sound, well beings, balanced harmony etc.

In ancient times it referred to the “ freedom from hunger and survival.” During the middle ages, it meant “ the desire for soundness and safety.” In modern period, it meant “ freedom from pestilence ( disease), starvation and wars.” Definition of health “Soundness of body or mind that condition in which its are duly and efficiently discharged.” Oxford dictionary WHO has given a comprehensive definition of health in its preamble to constitution in 1984. physical , mental, social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Criticism: The present health educationists argue health as the dynamic process but it is not always the condition and state because the person who feels well in the morning may become sick in the evening. That’s why WHO definition is idealistic in view rather than realistic one. It fails to explain about the affordability of people. The term wellbeing is not measurable and definable. In recent years, this definition has amplified to include the ability to lead socially and economically productive life. Note: World health day: 7 th April

Dimension of health: Health is multidimensional entity. WHO explained health in 3 dimensional perspectives that are physical, mental and social. Some explanations are as follows: a. Physical dimensions: State of well functioning of a body conceptualizes health biologically as a state in which every cell and every organ is functioning at optimum capacity and in perfect harmony with the rest of the body. Simply, physical health means being physically able or proper development and functioning of the body.
