Shakespeare’s Biography Born April 23, 1564. Stratford-upon-Avon Prep-school education Became an author, actor, director, and producer. Helped found The Lord Chamberlin’s Men (later The King’s Men)

Biography, Part II Married Anne Hathaway from Stratford. Children Susanna, Judith, and Hamnet Gained success in London drama and a partnership at The Globe Theatre. Died April 23, 1616.

Shakespeare’s Theatre The Globe I & II were both destroyed by fire from the thatch. A project was undertaken to rebuild it and The Globe III still holds productions today. Shakespeare also used Blackfriars and Whitefriars Theatres.

Shakespeare’s Writing Iambic Pentameter (aka “Blank Verse”) Iamb – a foot in which an unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed syllable. Meter – the beat or rhythm of the line He wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and 4 long poems. His plays were either tragedies, comedies, histories, or romances.

The Conventions of Tragedy Shakespeare followed the conventions set down by ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle in his classical work Poetics. Tragedy – a piece of literature that traces the struggles and eventual downfall of a hero. Hamartia – The hero has a tragic flaw Peripeteia – Reversal of Fortune for the hero Anagnorisis – Recognizes the problem (too late) Catharsis – Suffering for all (not death!)
