Slide 1:

Archaeologists must first check out an area before they begin an excavation. We call this a survey.

Slide 2:

When we begin to investigate a possible site, we visit the site, walk around, record information about the area, make measurements and quick maps, and take note of any artifacts we see on the ground.

Slide 3:

If it looks like the site would be good to excavate, we might start by digging a few STPs (Shovel Test Pits)

Slide 4:

Sometimes we find out some things about the site before we visit, by looking at maps or by talking to people who live near the area we are studying.

Slide 5:

GPS Units make it easy for us to map out an area quickly without having to use a compass and tape measure or a laser transit system.
