Premium member Presentation Transcript SPCC ABE /GED OVERVIEW AND PROCEDURES : SPCC ABE /GED OVERVIEW AND PROCEDURES WHO IS THE ADULT LEARNER : WHO IS THE ADULT LEARNER The adult learner wants to be treated with respect. They want to have the knowledge and experience that they bring to the program recognized and valued by the instructor. In addition, they want instruction that is relevant to their everyday lives. PLACEMENT TESTING/ORIENTATION : PLACEMENT TESTING/ORIENTATION Placement Testing and Orientation is giving to the public every other week on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is administered and on Wednesday an overview of SPCC and our Basic Skills Program is giving along with test results and class assignments. Students’ folders will be placed in your boxes. FIRST DAY OF CLASS/RETENTION : FIRST DAY OF CLASS/RETENTION 1.Look threw the student’s folder before class and be aware of his/her test scores. 2. Know the student’s first name 3. Ask the student a little about his/her self. 4. Ask what their goals are after completing class 5. GET TO KNOW THE STUDENT!! 6. Explain their results from testing and orientation (strongest & weakest subject). 7. Persuade the student to set a goal in his/her strongest subject ( this will help build self-esteem). REGISTRATION FORM : REGISTRATION FORM Remember we can not get funds from the STATE and FEDERAL Governments if you the instructor don’t turn in your paperwork correctly. *You must turn in students’ registration forms no later than a week from the first day of attendance. Your contract #ex(10BSP37300 )must be put in the section# and your ID# ex( 0077399 )that was assigned to you by HR must be put in the interviewer’s ID#. Every semester this procedure must be repeated for every student you register ; whether the student is new or returning. ROSTERS/TIME SHEETS/SIGN-IN SHEETS : ROSTERS/TIME SHEETS/SIGN-IN SHEETS *At the beginning of each semester you will be given a class roster and time sheets *Every student registration form you submit, his/her name need to be on your roster. *If a student’s name is on your roster and you do not turn in a registration form, we lose state and federal funds. *At the end of every month, instructors must turn in a copy of their roster with a time sheet. *Three weeks before the end of the semester you will be given a list of all the students that are suppose to be on your roster. Please, Please double check this list with your roster. If you have a student’s name on your roster, and that student’s name does not appear on your list you were given, please contact Rose Jodush at ex 5243 immediately. *At the end of the semester, total hours for each student and then total hours for the entire class. *If you are interested in computerizing your roster please contact Jerry Caudle ex 5814 or Leo Maganares ex 5877,It is easy and a time saver . *At the end of the semester please submit your sign-sheets along with your roster. POST - TESTING : POST - TESTING *You as the instructor are required to give the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) Form #10 for the post test. *The minimum number of hours a student can be post tested is 30. Post testing can be done earlier with the knowledge of knowing that student is withdrawing from class or completing the GED Tests. *TABE Test Codes are Language (20), Reading (21), Mathematics (22). *When you administer the TABE #10 and students show progress, please forward the results to Jody Chartier ex 5320 room 146 immediately, so she can the forward the results to the State Office. *The State of North Carolina requires each student to have a TABE score of 9.0 or above before taking the GED Practice or the GED Tests. That’s why it is important to give the TABE post test as often as possible after 30 hours of class instructions. LEIS (Literacy Education Information System) : LEIS (Literacy Education Information System) *Basic Skills LEIS runs from May 15 ,2010 to May 15, 2011 each year. *Mark the goal or goals you and the student decided. *Don’t mark GED or AHS as a goal if the student can’t achieve it in one semester. *The Basic Skills system office recommends setting a new goal each semester. *At the end of each semester, please submit outcomes (Student Data, Goals, Achievements) sheet for each student if possible, so if the student withdraw we will have some outcome measures at the end of the year. GED TESTING : GED TESTING *First, students must pre-register for the GED Tests. To pre-register they must have $7.50 (correct change), a valid NC picture ID or driver’s license and a social security card. *Students have to have a TABE score of 9th grade & above before taking the GED Tests. *Students must take the GED Practice Tests and score at least a 500 before they are allowed to take the GED Tests. *Once the students are ready to test, you must sign them up to test on the GED log sheet (located in the copy room), and give them a card noting the date, time and subject. You must sign them up the week prior to testing. *The minimum passing score on an individual test is 410. An average of 450 on each test equals 2250 points, which is required to pass the GED Tests. BASIC SKILLS CREED : BASIC SKILLS CREED WE BELIEVE that individuals are capable of achieving their full potential. WE BELIEVE that the seeds of this potential exist in the core of every individual’s being and can be nurtured through guidance and learning. WE BELIEVE that through teaching and mentoring others, individuals may realize the value of life long learning. WE BELIEVE in the power of learning to open minds to valuable experiences and opportunities for growth. WE BELIEVE that acquiring basic skills and literacy enhances an individual’s sense of self-worth and quality of life. WE BELIEVE that it is our responsibility to provide the skills to achieve learning and growth.
