The story: 1911 => 1950 : The story: 1911 => 1950 Frank Collins spoke at the Portland Convention, year 1911. It was Rotary’s 2nd convention with Paul Harris in his 2nd term as President of the National Association of RCs. He was asked to address the convention and one phrase of his talk stuck: “Service, Not Self”. This became Rotary’s motto: “Service Above Self” as adopted at the 1950 Convention. http://www.rotaryfirst100.org/leaders/collins/ Rotary mottoes : Rotary mottoes The phrase was first stated by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon, who made a speech in 1910 that included the remark, “He profits most who serves his fellows best.” The first motto of Rotary International, He Profits Most Who Serves Best, was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, USA, in August 1911. At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, commented that the proper way to organize a Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted — Service, Not Self. These two slogans, slightly modified, were formally approved to be the official mot-toes of Rotary at the 1950 convention in Detroit — He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. http://www.rotarymembers.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/ABCs-of-Rotary.pdf Rotary’s Philosophy : Rotary’s Philosophy Above Self or the philosophy of Service : Above Self or the philosophy of Service الفلسفة كلمة مشتقة من اللفظ اليوناني فيلوصوفيا، بمعنى محبة الحكمة أو طلب المعرفة.
