PowerPoint Presentation:

What does it mean to “follow” someone? Luke 9:23

Fan or Follower?:

Fan or Follower? Dictionary: “An enthusiastic admirer” A football fan who has all the team’s gear Knows all about the players and their stats “Follows” them on twitter Loyal, even when losing Want the world to know that this is “my team” What is a “Fan”?

Do we do the same?:

Do we do the same?

How do I know if I’m a fan or follower?:

How do I know if I’m a fan or follower? I’m way more of a Christian than THAT guy! Grading our spirituality “on the curve” A trap… Cultural Comparison? How often do I have a quiet time? How often do I show up at meetings? Do I tithe ? Do I pray enough? Do I serve? The Religious Ruler?

How does JESUS define what a “follower” is?:

How does JESUS define what a “follower” is? “Depart from me, I never knew you…” Scariest words in scripture? Actions are not the only evidence of discipleship It is possible to be used by Jesus, without knowing Him (ex. Balaam, Judas) He doesn’t need our ideas He wants to “know” us He wants our obedience Yada – to know and be completely known Matthew 7:21-23 “Obedience is better than sacrifice…” (1 Sam.15:22) “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I say…” (Luke 6:46) “If you love Me you will obey my commands…” (John 14:15) “This is love – that we walk in obedience…” (2 Jn 6) Fans can go through the motions, but followers obey Obedience is the evidence of our relationship The Importance of Obedience

Obedience often requires sacrifice:

Obedience often requires sacrifice Nicodemus Moves from being a “fan” in the darkness to a follower in the light May have been martyred for his faith during the 1 st century John 3:1-10, 7:50-52 & 19:38-39 “God calls people to worship Him with their obedience, and instead they try to fob Him off with their religion”- J. Hercus “I would rather obey than work miracles” – Martin Luther Why Obey?

Next steps:

Next steps Define the Relationship (again…) Don’t assume you’re a “follower” by comparing yourself to others, or by measuring your religious activity Seek to know Him, not just know things about Him Discern what He is asking of you and DO IT Especially when you don’t know where it will lead Especially when it costs you something Don’t call Him Lord, if you’re not prepared to obey Him
