Signs that an animal might be abused (cont)… :

Signs that an animal might be abused (cont)… Environmental signs Tied up alone outside for long periods of time without food or water, or food and water that is unsanitary. Kept outside in inclement weather without shelter. In an area littered with feces, garbage, broken glass or other objects that could harm them. Housed in kennels or cages that are too small.

Slide 6:

Elephants who perform in circuses are often kept in chains for as long as 23 hours a day from the time they are babies.

Slide 7:

More than 15 million warm-blooded animals are used in research every year.

Slide 8:

Scientists estimate that 100 species go extinct every day! That’s about one species every 15 minutes

Slide 9:

Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states….MICHAEL VICK!!!

Slide 10:

Many studies have found a link between cruelty to animals and other forms of interpersonal violence.

Slide 11:

Tens of thousands of wild and domesticated horses from the U.S. are cruelly slaughtered every year to be used for horsemeat in Europe and Asia.

Slide 12:

Neglect and abandonment are the most common forms of companion animal abuse in the United States.

Slide 13:

A fur coat is pretty cool-for an animal to wear. Eighteen red foxes are killed to make one fox-fur coat, 55 minks to make a mink coat.

Slide 14:

Acts of violence or neglect perpetrated against animals are considered animal cruelty.

Slide 15:

Many people who witness, or hear about animal cruelty, are not aware that legal action can be taken to help stop the problem.

Slide 16:

Neglect is the failure to provide an animal with the most basic of requirements of food, water, shelter, and veterinary care.

Slide 17:

Intentional cruelty is often more shocking and usually an indicator of a serious human behavior problem.

A.S.P.C.A. :

A.S.P.C.A. The ASPCA was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. Our mission, as stated by our founder, Henry Bergh, in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”

About the ASPCA :

About the ASPCA The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world.

What the ASPCA does… :

What the ASPCA does… As the first humane organization to be granted legal authority to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals, they are wholly dedicated to fulfilling the ASPCA mission through nonviolent approaches.

Ways to help animals in your community :

Ways to help animals in your community Report animal cruelty Start a neighborhood watch program Volunteer at your local Shelter or Animal Rescue Organization. Promote spaying and neutering Help your neighbors help their animals

Pet Overpopulation… :

Pet Overpopulation… Estimates for stray cats in the U.S. range up to 70 million! Most strays are lost pets who were not kept properly indoors or provided with identification. The cost of spaying or neutering a pet is less than the cost of raising puppies or kittens for a year.

Pet Overpopulation (cont)… :

Pet Overpopulation (cont)… Only 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered. 5 out of 10 dogs in shelters and 7 out of 10 cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.

Reasons to adopt and older dog… :

Reasons to adopt and older dog… What you see is what you get. They are easy to train Senior dogs are super-loving They are not a 24-7 job They settle in quickly Fewer messes They are CUTE!

What you should ask yourself before adopting. :

What you should ask yourself before adopting. Why do you want to adopt a pet? Are you ready to make a long-term commitment? Do you know what kind of pet it right for you? Can you afford to care for your pet’s health & safety? Are you willing to train your animal companion?

Tips for adopting the perfect family pet… :

Tips for adopting the perfect family pet… Before you adopt, talk to family members about what they want. Make sure your family is ready for the changes a new pet will bring. Do a little research to learn which breed is right for your family’s lifestyle. Teach your family and kids about pet parenting before you adopt.

Slide 27:

38 states and the District of Columbia currently have laws that make intentional cruelty a felony charge, while 12 states treat neglectful cruelty and intentional cruelty as a misdemeanor; but changes are in the works!

Slide 28:

If you witness or hear about animal cruelty taking place, report it to your local humane organization or call your local police, or your local animal control authorities. Become a member of the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade and take an active part in passing legislation!!!
