Know the reader! : 

Know the reader! They want to like you Knows your 18 or younger Does not expect you to know the “meaning of life” Assumes you are intelligent and motivated Assumes you will be a positive presence on campus

So you think you can write? : 

So you think you can write? The essay is the only qualitative data that an admissions counselor is able to process... Separate yourself from the competition

So you think you can write! Admissions counselors may only spend a few minutes with your essay...so make them count! An opening paragraph that POPS!

Step One: Brainstorm : 

Step One: Brainstorm Think before you write What are you like? (strongest personality traits) What have you done? (major accomplishments) Where do you want to go? (what would you most like to be doing)

Step Two: Selection : 

Step Two: Selection The best essays tell a story about the applicant Pick a topic you can write about in an interesting way Do not repeat information from the application (GPA, SAT’s, etc) Make it stand out...but make sure you can write about it – astrophysics is a cool topic...but can you write about it?

Step Three: Writing : 

Step Three: Writing Intro – catch the readers attention The most time should be spent on this part Body – relates to the introduction Simple language but powerful ideas “Show don’t tell.” – paint a picture with your words Closing – last chance to persuade your reader

You Decide... “I went hiking in New Hampshire last summer. It was very quiet at night and there were a lot of stars. I thought it was beautiful.”

Now hear this! : 

Now hear this! “Surrounded by thousands of stars, complete silence, and spectacular mountains, I stood atop New Hampshire’s Presidential Range awestruck by nature’s beauty.”

Quick Tips: : 

Quick Tips: Answer the question Don’t be boring Be specific clear and concise Use your own words...you’re not a thesaurus No SLANG Use transitions and change up your sentence structure Conclude your thoughts...last chance to impress Don’t use contractions!
