INTRODUCTION:

INTRODUCTION Avocado (Persea americana) Avocado is well-adapted to the wet zone of the low, mid and up country of Sri Lanka. At present, the total acreage under avocado is around 826 hectares. Present yields are low and the recorded annual production is around 11,600 tones.

Present situation of avocado cultivation in Sri Lanka :

Present situation of avocado cultivation in Sri Lanka Avocado is successfully grown in the districts of Kegalle, Kandy, Matale and certain areas of Bandarawela and Nuwara Eliya. The other potential areas where avocado could be grown are Gampaha, Colombo and Kurunegala

HARVESTING OF FRUITS & YIELDS:

HARVESTING OF FRUITS & YIELDS Determination of the correct harvest time is important because it affects the fruit quality and market life. The moment of harvest is the beginning of the postharvest life of the avocado fruit.

HARVESTING OF FRUITS & YIELDS:

HARVESTING OF FRUITS & YIELDS Harvesting indices Large fruits. Fruits which have less shining rind. Light yellow in color. Flesh is cream in color. Reduce the overall weight of the fruit. Can observe lenticels on the surface of the fruit.

PowerPoint Presentation:

In some varieties, when shaking can hear the sound which generate by the seed and the color of the seed rind. Growers say that it is easy to remove the rind.

HARVESTING OF FRUITS & YIELDS Cond.:

HARVESTING OF FRUITS & YIELDS Cond. Fruits are harvested using a picking-pole attaching a net bag to prevent falling of fruits during harvesting. climb up the tree, and once the fruit is picked it is collected to a bag which he is hanged in his back.

HARVESTING OF FRUITS & YIELDS Cond.:

HARVESTING OF FRUITS & YIELDS Cond. It is advised not to remove the stalk of the fruit .

POST HARVEST HANDELING AND STORAGE :

POST HARVEST HANDELING AND STORAGE Packing & transportation are most important in post harvest handling. Any injuries to the fruit would later accelerate ripening. Rough handling may result in browning. Polysacks are used to pack and transport avocados. keeping fruits at the collection points accelerates the ripening process due to heat buildup and ethylene .

POST HARVEST HANDELING AND STORAGE Cont.:

POST HARVEST HANDELING AND STORAGE Cont. Now growers and traders tend to use plastic containers. But most commonly the use Polysacks.

Most common packing method.:

POST HARVEST HANDELING AND STORAGE Cont.:

POST HARVEST HANDELING AND STORAGE Cont. There is no form of organized marketing system available for avocado In Sri Lanka. During transportation, 12%- 15% post harvest loss according to traders. In the store the post harvest loss is about 10%.

Mechanical damages when harvesting,:

Mechanical damages when harvesting,

Storage conditions:

Storage conditions Temperature is no doubt the single most influential factor in fruit storage. 10 to 25°C: the fruit softens faster as storage temperature increases. 5 to 8°C: softening is controlled, and it will only occur if the fruit is transferred to higher temperatures. 0 to 4°C, softening at these temperatures is limited by time, due to the risk of chilling injury. However recommended storage conditions may vary according to the avocado variety.

Chilling Injury:

Chilling Injury Avocados are susceptible to chilling injury when kept at temperatures below 10°C.

POSTHARVEST DISEASES OF AVOCADO:

POSTHARVEST DISEASES OF AVOCADO Anthracnose Caused by Glomerella cingulata

PowerPoint Presentation:

Anthracnose

PowerPoint Presentation:

Stem end rot This disease generally caused by Botryodiplodia theobromae

PowerPoint Presentation:

Scab Caused by Spaceloma perseae , affects young developing fruit .

Control :

Control Chemicals Postharvest temperature regimes Snap picking

CONCLUSION:

CONCLUSION There are certain constraints Avocado post harvest management. Poor marketing, handling, grading and packing. High harvesting losses due to premature harvesting and unsatisfactory harvesting techniques. Poor quality fruit and low yield. Poor arrangement of fruits in stalls
