MOLECULES AND IONS :

MOLECULES AND IONS

MOLECULE :

MOLECULE A molecule is an assembly of two or more atoms tightly bound together. A molecule that is made up of two atoms is called a diatomic molecule. Compounds that are composed of molecules are called molecular compounds and contain more than one kind of atom.

CHEMICAL FORMULA :

CHEMICAL FORMULA A notation that uses chemical symbols with numerical subscripts to convey the relative proportions of atoms of the different elements in a substance.

2 KINDS OF CHEMICAL FORMULAS :

2 KINDS OF CHEMICAL FORMULAS Molecular Formula Empirical Formula

MOLECULAR FORMULA :

MOLECULAR FORMULA Chemical formulas that indicate the actual numbers and types of atoms in a molecule are called molecular formulas.

EMPIRICAL FORMULA :

EMPIRICAL FORMULA Chemical formulas that give only the relative number of atoms of each type in a molecule are called empirical formulas.

IONS :

IONS Charged particles If electrons are removed from or added to a neutral atom, an ion is formed.

2 KINDS OF IONS :

2 KINDS OF IONS cation (an ion with a positive charge) anion (an ion with a negative charge) Compounds composed of anions and cations are called ionic compounds.

THINGS TO REMEMBER :

THINGS TO REMEMBER Metal atoms tend to lose electrons to for cations, whereas nonmetal atoms tend to gain electrons to form anions Cations are metal ions Anions are nonmetal ions

Slide 10:

An ion that consists of atoms joined as in a a molecule, but it has a net positive or negative charge is called POLYATOMIC IONS.

Slide 11:

IONIC COMPOUNDS ARE GENERALLY COMBINATIONS OF METALS AND NONMETALS. MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS ARE GENERALLY COMPOSED OF NONETALS ONLY.
