Temperate Deciduous Forests :

Temperate Deciduous Forests By: Abbas Mukhtar and Noor Naveed

What are Biomes? :

What are Biomes? A biome is a large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plants and animals. There are many different biomes and each biome is made up of many individual ecosystems.

Where are Temperate Deciduous Forests located? :

Where are Temperate Deciduous Forests located? Firstly, a temperate deciduous forest is a biome that is characterized by tress that shed leaves during the fall. These forests can be found in parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. Before these forests covered vast regions of the Earth but now they have decreased in numbers. They are mostly found in America, Europe and China.

Climate Condition in the Temperate Deciduous Forests :

Climate Condition in the Temperate Deciduous Forests The temperature range in these forests can be extreme. During the summers, the temperatures can go up to 35 degrees Celsius. In the winters, temperature could go below freezing. Temperature vary due to change of seasons. Growing season lasts for 4-6 months and there is water available for the plants. Temperate Deciduous forests are moist. They receive up to 20-60 inches of precipitation.

Plants in Temperate Deciduous Forests :

Plants in Temperate Deciduous Forests Tall tress such as maple, oak, and birch dominate the forest. There are also small trees and shrub which cover the ground. Plants like ferns, herbs and mosses are also found. Herbs, seeds, bulbs, and rhizomes are also there in the form of underground stems which get dormant during the winters. Leaves in every shade of orange, red, and yellow are everywhere in the forest.

Animals in Temperate Deciduous Forests :

Animals in Temperate Deciduous Forests The animals in temperate deciduous forests are adapted to use the forest plants for food and shelter. There are squirrels who eat nuts and fruits. There are bears who eat leaves and the berries. There are also grasshoppers who eat all types of vegetation. Other herbivores such as deer also eat leaves from trees and shrubs. There are almost all kind of animals in this forest and they learn to adapt to the changing seasons. Some animals like birds migrate and some animals like bears hibernate in the winters.

Why are there plants and animals in Temperate Deciduous Forests :

Why are there plants and animals in Temperate Deciduous Forests The temperate deciduous forest have very fertile soil because the rain and snow help decompose dead organic matter which in turn contributes to the rich, deep soils. During the Fall season, most deciduous tress begin to shed their leaves. The leaves fall because in winter, moisture in the soil becomes ice. This is why there are leaves all around the forest. The forest floor in temperate deciduous forests gets more sunlight than rain forest which is why ferns, herbs, and mosses grow.

Continued.. :

Continued.. In Spring, sunlight increases and temperature rises which causes the tree to grow new leaves then the seeds germinate and then rhizomes and roots grow new stems. The herbs, bulbs and rhizomes get dormant during the winter due to the insulation of soil, leaf litter and snow. Many other animals are there because of the nice weather and food.

Interesting Facts :

Interesting Facts Deciduous means that leaves change color in autumn, fall of in winter and then grow back in the summer. The temperate deciduous forests in North America have five times as many species of trees as in the forests of Europe. Not every biome has all four seasons but temperate deciduous forests have all four season and the plants and animals adapt in different ways for each season. The temperate deciduous forest get the second-most amount of rainfall per year which in winter is snow.
