Web 2.0 tools 1: Kerpoof

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof Location : www.kerpoof.com Kerpoof allows you to create and describe pictures , stories and even films that you yourself create . It provides a great way of extending the vocabulary of a unit and recycling some useful language structures . For example , the lexical set of this unit of Quest 1 is animals . It is also the lexical theme of this unit of Quest 3. The main grammar area is like / don’t like . And in this unit of Quest 3 the main language point is there’s / there are introduced along side various geographical features : The Kerpoof examples we’ve chosen provide an excellent opportunity to exploit any of these areas .

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof You can watch a short but useful tutorial on how to use the movie and picture options . Choose an option from the menu

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof Let’s look at the ‘ make a picture ’ option which is ideal for younger pupils . First choose a scene :

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof The scene you choose will appear automatically with a variety of options either side .

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof Choose a figure from the right-hand column and drag it onto the scene .

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof Each time you introduce a new object , three icons appear around it allowing you to modify it . The double-arrow icon allows you to change the size and perspective of the object . You can rotate it using the rotation ring icon .

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof Gradually build up your picture .

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof Up to now , what opportunities have we had for language work ? Assume you have access to an IWB where you can set up and model the activity to the whole class . Then you have the option of building up the picture together or , if your pupils have access to individual computers , netbooks or laptops, getting them to build up their own pictures once you’ve modelled what to do. List a few language opportunities before you move to the next slide .

PowerPoint Presentation:

Our examples : 1) Like – Which scene do you like ? / I like … / I don’t like … / I prefer … 2) TPR – eg Click on the duck / Put the duck on the rock etc. Model whole class ( teacher – pupil ) Chain : each pupil invited to front in turn to give instruction to the next . Once the picture starts to get too full, pupils could be instructed to remove items : ‘ drag the duck away ’ Pair work ( pupil – pupil ): take turns to give each other instructions 4) Picture description (pre- prepared by teacher or created in activity 2 or 3 above ) Model whole class ( teacher – pupil ) Closed pairs ( pupil – pupil ) Write up for homework (2nd / 3rd cycle ) 3) Picture dictation : there’s / there are / prepositions ( teacher – pupil )

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof You can add captions to your picture … … and speech bubbles :

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof These provide a great way of bringing more language into your picture .

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof Another great feature of Kerpoof , particularly in a CLIL context , is the background information it provides to some of the elements you bring into play . For example , when you drag the sun icon onto this picture , the following pop-up appears , providing some interesting and useful content about the sun :

Kerpoof:

There are various other features of Kerpoof , such as the hidden ‘ koins ’ which can be won by clicking on certain icons . Kerpoof The amount of ‘ koins ’ you’ve collected can be found by clicking on your ‘ Favourites ’ bag:

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof When you’ve finished , click on ‘Done’ and save the changes .

Kerpoof 2 Imagine you want to do a creative , freer-practice activity to practise some of the language in the course book . Let’s take Quest 3 Unit 7 as an example . This next section of the presentation looks at the ‘ tell a story ’ function of Kerpoof . The target language here is daily routines . We might also want to practise some of the secondary language present in the story on the next page:

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof:

Kerpoof The story provides us a great opportunity to transfer the language we are covering in the unit to a new, engaging context . It gives us a chance to of some freer practice of the target and secondary language in the unit .
