slide 1: What goes into Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition in which the tiny blood
vessels which nourish the retina of the eyes are damaged due
to chronically high blood sugar. It is a common condition faced
by diabetic patients. Retina is the light sensitive area at the
back of the eye which gets totally distorted due to this eye
condition leading to vision impairment and in extreme cases
complete loss of vision.
All kind of diabetes that is Type 1 Type 2 as well as gestational
may lead to diabetic retinopathy. Usually found among those
who are in the age group of 40 and above women who develop
or already have diabetes during pregnancy are also at high risk
of onset/ worsening of this eye ailment. A good percentage of
the Indian population suffers from diabetes. Thus diabetic
retinopathy is an obvious eye impairement which many Indians
are victim of and is also one major cause of blindness in India.
Though in the initial stage diabetic retinopathy goes
undetected all those who suffer from diabetes must undergo
tests like pupil dilation tonometry OCT etc to keep a check on
its development. When it comes to treating this condition
there is no cure for it. At most photocoagulation/ laser
treatment can be done if the retina is not severally damaged.
This way the chances of vision loss can be brought down
drastically. Basically two types of laser treatments can be donei
in order to cure diabetic retinopathy:
1. Focal/ Grid laser treatment
2. Scatter/ Panretinal laser treatment
slide 2: In focal laser treatment the laser energy is focused directly on
the effected area so that the damaged eye tissues are
destroyed. As the name says in this method the focus is on
individual blood vessels. Scatter laser treatment on the other
hand involves the use of 1200 to 1800 tiny spots of laser
energy at the outer layer of the retina. In this case the centre
of the retina is left untouched.
There are also cases wherein the vitereous gel is removed by a
surgical procedure. This also helps in halting/ postponing the
loss of vision of the patient. But diabetic retinopathy
treatment is not required until the macula of the retina has
been effected.
Though the treatment does not require an overnight stay for
the patient what is more important is that the patient follows
all the pot-surgery precautions diligently. Eye is a very sensitive
area and is easily prone to infections. Thus it becomes all the
more critical to take proper care of your eyes once the surgery
is done.
