How did it Happen? :How did it Happen? In 1996 the first online bookmarking site was created, itList. This fathered a host of competing sites that made the service legitimate.
Modifications to the original service led to today’s version of social bookmarking.
Now these services offer far more than just the ability to save websites online.
In 2003 Del.icio.us coined the term, “social bookmarking”.
Tools within Social Bookmarking. :Tools within Social Bookmarking. Social bookmarking started with only the ability to save websites online and keep some of them either public or private.
Newer services began to offer folders to sort bookmarks.
The newest generation of this service offer the ability to rate websites, tag them for easy searching and even random searches for areas of interests.
Advantages :Advantages Tag based labeling of websites is superior to search engine’s traditional method of crawling about and using algorithms to determine content because it relies upon people actually understanding the content on a site.
People tend to find sites that are not noticed by web spiders.
Social bookmarking can rate a site based on what people, how often a site is bookmarked, as opposed to the method of tallying external links leading to a source.
Advantages :Advantages The bookmarks can be accessed anywhere with in internet connection.
Easy sorting of personal bookmarks through the tagging of items.
Great way to find and share new sites with friends and the general public.
Disadvantages :Disadvantages Because the vocabulary used in tagging sites is not controlled or standardized in any way there can be any number of different words that people will tag a certain site with.
The vocabulary problem that exists with tagging is rather severe and can cause all manner of problems including incorrect classification.
Spamming has become a problem due to site owners attempting to bolter their ranking with false bookmarks. Companies are constantly changing their security approaches and are even beginning to force users to prove their humanity, a increasing trend on the internet.
Summary :Summary Social bookmarking is a wonderful tool and an important aspect of web 2.0.
Can be more accurate in searches than traditional methods.
For a simple and interesting explanation of what social bookmarking is I would suggest this video.
