Meet the 2011 laureates

LAUREATE 2011 FOR EUROPE :

LAUREATE 2011 FOR EUROPE Sustainable luxury goods made from waste Kresse Wesling - UK

LAUREATE 2011 FOR SUB SAHARAN AFRICA Lorna Rutto – Kenya Eco-friendly fence posts made from plastic waste

PowerPoint Presentation:

The city of Nairobi generates over 2,800 metric tonnes of waste every day, 20% being plastic. Most of this is disposed off crudely resulting in heaps of garbage littering streets and open fields. This is compounded by inadequate policing of the rules, economic pressures, reluctant administrators and absence of viable disposal options. On 14th June 2007, the government banned the use of flimsy plastics (polythene bags). However, despite still being in effect, the ban has largely been ignored and their use continues unabated ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6754127.stm ). The landfill at Dandora is filled to capacity and it will be until 2017 before it is decommissioned (39 yrs after opening) ( http://allafrica.com/stories/201009270035.html ). Our forests are in serious decline. About 222,000 acres of the Mau forest has been destroyed. Demand for timber has soared due to the rapidly growing housing market. Many species e.g. the Red Cedar Tree (protected by a 2007 Presidential Directive) from which cedar posts are made are slowly becoming extinct ( http://www.demotix.com/news/226119/loggers‐invade‐aberdares ).
