Bay of Fundy/Tidal Power :Bay of Fundy/Tidal Power Jackie Povitsky Period 9

What are ocean tides? :What are ocean tides? Ocean Tides are the rising of Earth's ocean surface caused by the tidal forces of the Moon and the Sun acting on the oceans. Tides occur with a period of approximately twelve and a half hours and are influenced by the shape of the near shore bottom. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_of_Fundy http://www.greenlaunches.com/alternative-energy/nasa-says-oceanic-tides-can-be-used-to-generate-electricity.php

What is the Bay of Fundy? :What is the Bay of Fundy? A bay on the coast of North America, on the northeast end of the Gulf of Maine. It is known for its high tidal range and the bay is contested as having the highest vertical tidal range in the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_of_Fundy http://new.schoolnotes.com/xpages/view/62057

Why is the Bay of Fundy a special example of ocean tides? :Why is the Bay of Fundy a special example of ocean tides? Folklore in the Mi’kmaq claims that the tides are caused by a giant whale splashing in the water. The time it takes a large wave to go from the mouth of the bay to the inner shore and back is practically the same as the time from one high tide to the next. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_of_Fundy http://photos.igougo.com/images/p218637-New_Brunswick-Bay_of_Fundy_at_Low_Tide.jpg

What is tidal power as an alternative energy source? :What is tidal power as an alternative energy source? Tidal Power is the generation of electrical power through the harnessing of the ebb and flow of the tides. A barrage, which is in fact a huge dam, is built across a river estuary or bay. This barrage has gates in it which allow the water to flow into the barrage with the incoming tide. These gates are then closed when the tide begins to go back out. The tidal range has to be sufficient in order for this to be a practical means to generate power. http://www.alternative-energy-fuels.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/tidal-energy.jpg http://library.thinkquest.org/06aug/01335/tidal.htm

What are the pros of tidal power as an alternative energy source? :What are the pros of tidal power as an alternative energy source? Tidal power pros and cons must be evaluated, and compared to the pros and cons of other energy sources, to determine which ones are the best for the earth and the environment, as well as being the most effective at meeting the global demand for power. With Tidal Power, this process does not emit greenhouse gases or particle pollution, which fossil fuels like oil and coal do, which can have a devastating effect on the environment and all living things on the planet. Tides are very reliable because it is easy to predict when high and low tides will occur. The tide goes in and out twice a day usually at the predicted times. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061029171632AA7bYU2 http://www.building.co.uk/Pictures/436xAny/i/f/h/tidal_station_1.jpg

What are the cons of tidal power as an alternative energy source? :What are the cons of tidal power as an alternative energy source? Tidal energy projects involving tidal dams are more expensive per KW of installed power than similar size systems that use river dams. Tidal flow is intermittent. Tidal energy use involving dams creates many of the same environmental concerns as damming rivers. Tidal dams restrict fish migration and cause silt build up which affects tidal basin ecosystems in negative ways. http://landscape.ced.berkeley.edu/~kondolf/topics/dams/dams1.gif
