SIDDHA MEDICINE :

SIDDHA MEDICINE COMPILED BY Dr. J.ASOKAN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR SIDDHA MEDICINE

Slide 2:

Sddhars held that the body is the only instrument with which one could attain success in spiritual evolution and thereby get rid of diseases, decay and death. By rousing the Kundalini (serpent power) lying dormant at the base of the spinal column in the region of the sacral plexus, they attained eternal bliss and supernatural powers.

Slide 3:

Siddhars described 96 principles as the constituents of Human being. They include Physical, Physiological, Mental and Intellectual components of a person. They are nothing but the manifestations of the Five Basic Elements.

Internal Medicine      The internal medicines are thirty two in number. They include medicines with short life period to medicines which could be used even for hundreds of years. The metallic preparations that could be preserved and used for longer duration are considered as higher medicines. They act even in very small quantity and are capable of curing chronic illness.

Slide 14:

. Surasam - These are extracts of leaves, roots, barks, flowers, rhizomes, fruits etc, which are boiled so that their water content is greatly reduced. Their duration of life is three hours.      Example: ginger juice surasa.      2. Charu - They are extracts of leaves, roots, barks, flowers etc, obtained by grinding them, or obtained by adding some astringent substances or by direct heat application.

Slide 15:

Kudineer - These are decoctions prepared by adding water to dry herbs, or fresh ones and the boiling them so that the water content is greatly reduced to 1/16th or 1/8 of the water added. Some times, some substances are not directly added to the water but instead they are kept in a clean white cloth, tied and immersed in the water. They also could be used for three hours.

Slide 16:

4. Karkam - These are pastes obtained by grinding wet drugs or by adding water decoctions to dry powders. The kalvam or the pestle and mortar should be cleaned when the drugs are ground in it. It should be ensured that all drugs added to it are properly mixed. Its life period is three hours.      5. Utkalee - The drugs are added to rice either raw or boiled or to bengal gram flour, ground properly, sugar or jaggery added to it and then boiled so that it is made in to a paste form, where the outer layer is dry and the inner moist.      6. Adai - Some leaves are added to rice flour and ground properly and baked in hot oven after applying ghee to it. The life period is three hours.

Slide 17:

7. Choornam - The dried drugs are taken separately, purified, either by frying or otherwise and made in to fine powders and sieved in fine cloth and mixed with other powder of the drug.      The purification of the choornam is made by baking it either in water or in milk. The life period is three months.      8. Pittu - The drugs are made in to fine powder separately; mixed, baked either in water or in milk and then sugar or jaggery is added to it. The life period is three months.      9. Vadagam - The raw drugs are made in to fine powder separately, and then jaggery or palm sugar is added to it and baked in milk - water combination until the milk is completely dried up. Then it is ground when it is hot and made in to small pills. The life period is three months.

Slide 18:

Mercury In North America, mercury based medicines are banned although the dental field still non-chalantly performs mercury amalgam fillings. Most practitioners would caution patients against using some Ayurvedic, Siddha, and Tibetan medicine due to the mercury and lead.

Slide 19:

This is largely due to ignorance, as the mercury used in these medicines are completely transformed into inert compound or ores (bhasma) through a 18 step process before being prescribed as medicine. (On the other hand it has been proven via X-ray that every time a person with mercury amalgam fillings chew their food they swallow a little of the mercury in their fillings. However the Dental Association keeps on stating it is such minute amounts to warrant health concerns. You be the judge of that).

Slide 20:

Mercury occupies a very high place in Siddha medicine. It is used as a catalytic agent in many of its medicines. When mercury is used it is used in combination with sulphur. The addition of sulphur is to control the fluidity of mercury-this converts to mercuric sulphite which is insoluble in mineral acids. Siddhas used 5 forms of mercury.

Slide 21:

mercury metal-rasam (2) red sulphide of mercury-lingam (3)mercury chloride- veeram (4) mercury subchloride (mercury chloride)-pooram (5) red oxide of mercury-rasa chenduram. Ordinary rasa chenduram (red oxide of mercury) is a poison but when it is processed as Poorna chandrodayam according to Siddha practice, it becomes ambrosia. Research is necessary to solve such apparent riddles of the transformation of these admittedly poisonous compounds.

Slide 22:

Siddars not only depend on rare herbs for kapla treatments. They use certain minerals and metal also. It is beleived that with the help of rare single kapla plant , mercury, sulphur, arsenic, etc., may be consolidated to stand the test of fire.Siddha kapla drugs of mineral compounds contain chiefly gold, mercury, sulphur and salts.

Slide 23:

Mercurial compunds are highly effective as anti-syphilitic, nervine, tonic, stimulant alternatives and bacterostatic. Small doses of calcined oxides prepared according to the Siddha method ensures certainty of effect and absorption in the system.

Slide 24:

Sulphur:Calcined sulphur or red oxide of sulphur can be obtained by solidating it first by the Siddha method of purification. In small doses, it conserves the body, and it is diaphoretic and alterative. Therapeutically, it is used as both external and internal remedy against skin diseases, rheumatic arthritis, asthma, jaundice and blood poisoning. Arsenic:As per Siddha kalpa, purified and consolidated arsenic is effective against all fevers, asthma and anemia.

Slide 25:

Gold:It is alterative, nervine tonic, antidote to poison and a powerful sexual stimulant. Very little is absorbed in the system. Care is taken to see that calcination of gold is free from metallic state and lustre to ensure safe absorption in the system. Thus, these drugs and metallic minerals can be screened for its anti-viral, immune stimulant and immuno-modulator activity.

Slide 26:

As HIV negative people have taken Kalpha drugs for rejuvenation and long life, it is believed that if Kayakapla therapy is thoroughly investigated using modern parameters it might lead one to find whether these drugs could be used in preventative or curative benefits in AIDS or other denegrative disorders.
