Although Christians believe that there is only one God, they say that he has three distinct parts. This is referred to as the Trinity. (Tri=Three)
In the Old Testament there is no mention of the Trinity, however, in many cases when God speaks he refers to himself as ‘we’ or ‘us’. (Genesis 1:26 ‘And now let us make human beings.)
The three members of the Trinity are the Father, son and Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost).
Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God. They believe that although Jesus was a man he was also God. When Jesus died he said that he would send his spirit to earth to help his disciples. This is the holy Spirit.
According to the Bible the Holy Spirit descended like a dove on Jesus when he was baptised. It also appeared to the disciples after Jesus died, tongues of fire appeared above their heads. Christians celebrate this at Pentecost.
Some people find it hard to understand how one God can have three members.
Some people say that humans have three natures, mind, body and soul. God has three natures Father (mind), Son (body) and Holy Spirit (soul).
