http://www.ipcalculus.com info@ipcalculus.com Overview 2010 © IPCalculus Services The interleukins are a family of cytokines (chemical messengers) that include IL-1, IL-d (sometimes called T-cell growth factor), IL-10 and IL-12. IL-1 activates CD4 cells, mediates acute systemic immune symptoms (e.g., fever), and acts on the hyupothalamus (a gland in the brain that helps regulate metabolic rate) to decrease appetite. Interleukins are basically the method of immune cross-talk and communication. Interleukins are the primary messengers and directors of the immune system. They can cause cellular proliferation, cell activation, inflammation, physiology changes such as fever and pain, allergies as with histamine release and growth. There are 35 different types of interleukins; namely from Interleukin-1 to Interleukin-35 and many others are still in clinical trials. Interleukins, like other cytokines, are often involved in stimulating or suppressing the immune system and inflammation.
