OV-Fiets, the Netherlands :

10 OV-Fiets, the Netherlands Introduced by the Dutch Cyclist Association and ProRail, a government-owned company in 2002 The OV-fiets aims to reduce the inconvenience that is related to the use of a rental bicycle at the activity-end of a train trip: the need for identification, the need to pay a deposit, and the time that is involved in these transactions. 185 bicycle stations (2009) Promoting Bike-and-ride: The Dutch ExperienceMartens, Karel,  Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice, Vol.41, No.4, pp.326-338, 2007

Rental Fee :

13 Rental Fee maximum rental period is 60 hours OV-fiets official site http://www.ov-fiets.nl/ subscription costs: 9.50 € per year

“OV-Fiets is EasyJets” :

14 “OV-Fiets is EasyJets” The spokesman of OV-fiets told that “OV-Fiets is EasyJets of public transport ” traditional rental bike is more expensive, around 6.5 euro per day A day OV-fiets is more than half cheaper: 2.75 euro http://www.fnvspoor.nl/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=915 2005

Survey :

15 Survey A survey carried out in 2003 shows that the OV-fiets has led to a substantial increase in bicycle use for egress trips among OV-fiets subscribers. Data on trip purposes show that the OV-fiets provides an egress solution for especially non-recurrent trips, notably business trips and trips to family or friends. Since these trips are infrequent, the purchase of a second bicycle cannot solve the egress problem. The introduction of the OV-fiets has also led to a small rise in train ridership. Bicingin in Barcelona :

16 Bicingin in Barcelona It was implemented in Barcelona in 2007, with a contract awarded to advertising company Clear Channel The scheme initially operated with 1,500 bicycles and 100 docking stations. The scheme has subsequently been expanded and now operates with 6,000 bicycles and 400 docking stations. In February 2009 the scheme had 186,000 registered users, representing 9% of the city’s total population. Transport for London Feasibility study for a central London cycle hire scheme, 2008

How to Use :

17 How to Use To use the system you must become a member. The provision of a credit card number is necessary. To rent a bike one simply swipes the contactless card at a service station to be personally identified by the system, which then unlocks a bike from the support frame. To return a bicycle one simply places the bike in a spare slot at a Bicing station bicing official web site http://www.bicing.com/ wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicing

Finance :

19 Finance The City of Barcelona pays Clear Channel a fixed sum each year to implement, maintain, operate and expand the scheme, rather than fund it through advertising. Some of the funding comes from the on-street car parking charges. A third of the cost is also covered by the revenue generated from registration fees and extended time usage. Rental Fee :

20 Rental Fee Registration fee Annual subscription : €24 Weekly ticket : €1 An extra charge of €150 is applied to the user’s credit card when they do not return the bicycle within 24 hours Transport for London Feasibility study for a central London cycle hire scheme, 2008 The city recommends to use other rental bikes for persons who want use bicycles longer than 2 hours.

Problems :

21 Problems Topography causes a large number of vans to be required in order to re-distribute the bicycles. Ten vans re-distribute bicycles, the same number as in Paris but for less than a quarter the number of bicycles Vandalism Bike looses: 600 per year The success of the scheme was not as predicted and as a result the demand has been underestimated. This has resulted in higher operational costs and sometimes bicycles not being available at some locations. Transport for London Feasibility study for a central London cycle hire scheme, 2008

unsuccessful project :

22 unsuccessful project “Green Bike Scheme” in Cambridge Cambridge did introduce a 'Green Bike Scheme' in October 1993, but it was a spectacular failure and brought international disrepute to the city. The idea was that you hopped on a green bike, then hopped off, leaving the bike for another to use.  All 300 cycles were stolen by the end of the first day. The scheme was abandoned within a year newstatesman http://www.newstatesman.com/society/2007/07/bikes-scheme-transport-london BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/cambridgeshire/content/articles/2006/09/29/bike_cambs_cycle_campaign_feature.shtml
