Dissertation Proposal:

Dissertation Proposal Perception on Discussion Forums and Messages by University Professors who Adopted Course Management System for Hybrid Classes

Problem Statement:

Problem Statement Collaboration and communication features in CMS’s are underutilized or disregarded by university faculty members in hybrid courses.

Research Objectives:

Research Objectives Perception of university professors teaching hybrid courses to the use of Discussion Board and Messages in Blackboard .

General Objectives:

General Objectives Importance of Roger’s innovation attributes encouraging and discouraging use of Discussion Board and Messages (Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity, Trialability, Observability).

Specific Objectives:

Specific Objectives Know adoption levels of Discussion Board and Blackboard Messages in hybrid courses. Identify key innovation attributes as perceived by professors teaching hybrid courses.

Theoretical Framework:

Theoretical Framework Barriers to the use of technology Time, training, maintaining the course Social, cultural, academic environment. Demographics

Theoretical Framework:

Theoretical Framework Managerial use of CMS’s Uploading documents File exchange Posting grades

Theoretical Framework:

Theoretical Framework Beyond CMS’s Managerial Tasks Dot.Generation Communication and collaborative tools Student centered

Theoretical Framework:

Theoretical Framework Need for research on this phenomenon Preserve face-to-face traits + technology Understanding adoption elements Specific studies

Theoretical Framework:

Theoretical Framework Diffusion of Innovations Theory Relative advantages Compatibility with cultural values Complexity of the innovation Trialability Observability by others

Theoretical Framework:

Theoretical Framework The Blackboard Platform Reports from surveys Worldwide OCDE Universities USA Usage varies

Research Methodology:

Research Methodology Research Design Cross-sectional, variables will remain non-manipulated. Research environment UTB/TSC

Research Methodology:

Research Methodology Research Questions Relationship between professors’ perception and level of acceptance of Discussion Board and Messages.

Research Methodology:

Research Methodology Research Hypotheses There is statistically significant difference between perception of Discussion Board and Messages and levels of acceptance in hybrid courses.

Variables of Study:

Variables of Study Independent variables Rogers’s Innovation Attributes As perceived by members of a social system, are positively related to its rate of adoption. (Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity, Trialability, Observability).

Variables of Study:

Variables of Study Dependent Variables Acceptance levels Discussion Board Messages

Population Sample:

Population Sample 247 full time and part time faculty members using Blackboard platform to teach any variation of face-to-face courses supported by Blackboard platform in five schools or colleges at UTB/TSC during the Fall semester 2007

Population Sample:

Population Sample Electronic calculator from Creative Research Systems. 151 potential participants with a .05 confidence interval and a confidence level of 95 percent. Random but proportional to faculty population at schools’ within UTB/TSC.

Research instrument:

Research instrument Instrument design Two previous dissertations’ questionnaires Phrasing adaptation Self-administrated Likert scale 1- 5 gradient Database Access file

Research instrument:

Research instrument Validity of the questionnaire Keyword regarding Rogers’ innovation attributes Reliability Reyes source =0.68 Surendra source =0.78 Pilot test =0.84

Pilot study:

Pilot study Sampled 30 participants proportionally to UTB/TSC schools. Voluntary reviewers 18 valid responses (out of 20) Pilot test reliability =0.84 Validity.-Varimax 1 component responsible 95 % variance.

Data collection:

Data collection Instrument Application Process Distributed among departments Addressing 247 faculty members Self-administered, no names involved Invitation to participate via e-mail plus reminder 10 days later

Data collection:

Data collection Instrument Application Process Collected data input to Access database Clean-up in Excel Data from Excel into SPSS

Data analysis:

Data analysis Descriptive analysis Frequency tables ANOVA Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) Many variables are grouped into a smaller number of factors To assess validity. Multiple regression analysis Assesses variable relationships.
