Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and our National Anthem!

Slide 9:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of The United States of America. And to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Slide 10:

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Slide 11:

Show respect – every person is important. Practice self-control – YOU are responsible for you. Speak for yourself – not for anyone else. Avoid teasing – who needs it? Work hard – success will follow. Make the most of each day – life is a gift!

Today in History 1990 Mo Space telescope in orbit The crew of the U.S. space shuttle Discovery places the Hubble Space Telescope, a long-term space-based observatory, into a low orbit around Earth. The space telescope, conceived in the 1940s, designed in the 1970s , and built in the 1980s , was designed to give astronomers an unparalleled view of the solar system, the galaxy , and the universe. Initially, Hubble's operators suffered a setback when a lens aberration was discovered, but a repair mission by space-walking astronauts in December 1993 successfully fixed the problem, and Hubble began sending back its first breathtaking images of the universe. Free of atmospheric distortions, Hubble has a resolution 10 times that of ground-based observatories. About the size of a bus, the telescope is solar-powered and orbits Earth once every 97 minutes. Among its many astronomical achievements, Hubble has been used to record a comet's collision with Jupiter , provide a direct look at the surface of Pluto , view distant galaxies, gas clouds, and black holes, and see billions of years into the universe's past.

Today in History 1986 Tues Maria Shriver marries Arnold Schwarzenegger Almost a decade after they met at a celebrity tennis tournament, the television news reporter Maria Shriver marries the movie actor and former bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger on this day in 1986. Politically, it seemed an unlikely match: Shriver, then a co-anchor for the CBS Morning News in New York City , was a Democrat and a member of one of the most prominent political families in the country. Her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was the sister of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy , while her father, R. Sargent Shriver , had been the Democratic nominee for vice president in 1972. Schwarzenegger, who was born in Austria on July 30, 1947, came to the United States in 1968 and became an American citizen in 1983. Soon after that, he began actively campaigning on behalf of Republican candidates; he would later be named chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports by President George H.W. Bush .

Today in History 4977 bc Universe is created, according to Kepler On this day in 4977 B.C., the universe is created, according to German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, considered a founder of modern science. Kepler is best known for his theories explaining the motion of planets. Kepler's research was slow to gain widespread traction during his lifetime, but it later served as a key influence on the English mathematician Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) and his law of gravitational force. Additionally, Kepler did important work in the fields of optics, including demonstrating how the human eye works, and math. He died on November 15, 1630, in Regensberg, Germany. As for Kepler's calculation about the universe's birthday, scientists in the 20th century developed the Big Bang theory, which showed that his calculations were off by about 13.7 billion years.

Today in History 1789 Mutiny on the HMS Bounty Th Three weeks into a journey from Tahiti to the West Indies, the HMS Bounty is seized in a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian, the master's mate. Captain William Bligh and 18 of his loyal supporters were set adrift in a small, open boat, and the Bounty set course for Tubuai south of Tahiti. On April 4, 1789, the Bounty departed Tahiti with its store of breadfruit saplings. On April 28, near the island of Tonga, Christian and 25 petty officers and seamen seized the ship. Bligh was an oppressive commander and insulted those under him.

Today in History 1986 Fri Roger Clemens strikes out 20 batters in single game On April 29, 1986, in a game against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park, Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox becomes the first pitcher in Major League Baseball to strike out 20 batters in a nine-inning game. Ten years later, Clemens repeats the feat, the only player in baseball history to do so.

Last Weeks’ Puzzle of the Day:

Last Weeks’ Puzzle of the Day Apples A basket contains 5 apples. Do you know how to divide them among 5 kids so that each one has an apple and one apple stays in the basket? No answers submitted……. Each child received an apple – one of the children’s apple was STILL IN THE BASKET!!!

Puzzle of the Day:

Puzzle of the Day If it is now 4:00 p.m. Saturday, in hours from now, what time and day will it be? (Assume no daylight saving time changes in the period.) A. 5:00 a.m. Saturday B. 1:00 a.m. Sunday C. 5:00 p.m. Tuesday D. 1:00 a.m. Wednesday E. 5:00 a.m. Wednesday

Slide 38:

The correct answer is E Explanation Since each day has 24 hours, it is a good idea to divide 253 by 24 to find the number of complete 24-hour intervals in 253 hours and the number of hours remaining after the 24-hour intervals have been accounted for. When 253 is divided by 24 , the quotient is 10 and the remainder is 13 . The 10 complete 24-hour intervals tell you that days, or one full week plus 3 days, go by, bringing you to Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The 13 additional hours take you into the next day, Wednesday. The 13 hours will end at 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
