His interest in boxing first took place on the streets of where he first grew up, he dealt with different forms of prejudice constantly and wasn’t afraid to stand up for himself in any situation. He didn’t constantly get into fights but he knew what he was doing if he did. At the Age of 12…: At the Age of 12… At the age of 12, Ali had his bike stolen and when speaking with the police officer (Joe Martin) who was dealing with his situation, he had told him he wanted to beat the thief up. The officer replied with, “You better learn to fight before you go around challenging people.” Officer Martin had helped kids train professionally, as in boxing, in a gym. So that’s when Ali began his interest in boxing. A Champion in the Making…: A Champion in the Making… Ali began training with Officer Joe Martin, and it wasn’t long before he started his boxing career. In his first amateur match in 1954, he won by split decision and went on to win the Championship Golden Gloves for novices in the light heavyweight class in 1956. 3 years later, he won the Golden Gloves tournament of Champions and the Amateur Athletic Union’s national title for the light heavyweight division.
