Conditionals (1) zero, first, second

Conditionals-:

Conditionals - They express a condition and a result. Many sentences with IF are conditionals. We use different tenses and different structures, depending on what we are trying to express.

The zero conditional..:

The zero conditional .. describes situationsthat are alwaystrue . We use the present simpletense in both the mainclauses and the ifclauses .  If I go to school, I get up at seven . ( Whenever I go to school I get up at the same time. )  I f you park yourcaron double yellowlines , youpay a fine. ( Wheneveryou park illegally , youpay a fine.)

The firstconditional…:

The firstconditional … are used to speculateaboutpossiblesituationsthatcanreally happen at present or in future . We do notuse will in anifclause to describefutureactivities ( compareit to time clauses ). We makeifclauseswith if + present tense and mainclauseswith will + bare infinitive . If he studies hard, he'll pass the exams . If we catch the 10.15 train, we willarriveon time .

NOTE::

NOTE: Instead of will, we can also use may, might, can, could, shall, should, ought to and have to.

We can also use the first conditional sentence with::

We can also use the first conditional sentence with: An imperative (if + present tense + imperative): For giving instructions about real or likely situations in the present or the future.  If you make a mistake use an eraser.  If you hear from Susan today , tell her to ring me.

The secondconditionalsentence…:

The secondconditionalsentence … we speculateaboutsituationsthatwillprobablynever happen at present or in future . We makeifclauseswith if + past tense and mainclauseswith would + bare infinitive . Instead of would , we canalsousemight and could .  If I had more time, I would help you . ( But I amnot free at the moment. I can't help you ) .  If I won a million dollars, I would start a business of myown . ( But I knowthatit is notrealistic .)

NOTE::

NOTE: All these conditional sentences can also written with the ‘if’ clause in the second half of the sentence. Useaneraserifyoumake a mistake . I wouldbuy a new house if I won the lottery . ( nocomma )

Unless:

Unless Means ‘except if’ or ‘if.. Not’ We’rehaving a picnic in the morning , unlessitrains . = … exceptifitrainsor .. Ifitdoesn’train .

In case:

In case Means ‘because it/he/she might’. Takeyour mobile in case I want to callyou . = … because I might want to callyou .

As long as and provided that:

As long as and provided that Both mean ‘only if’. As long as/ Providedthateveryone comes, the party willbe a greatsuccess . We can also use so long as with the same meaning.  You’ll pass the examso long as you’recareful .
