Introduction : Introduction Teenage pregnancies is not only a one person issue. It involves both girl and boy, and most of the time it involves the media influence, parental influence, peer pressure, and teens attitudes. Many teenagers feel the pressure that surrounds them in their every day life and feel the need to have sex. In which many result in teenage pregnancies. Teenagers are not well educated about sex, pregnancies, and being a parent. These are babies having babies and everyone should be concerned about this problem. Reasons to be concerned about: : Reasons to be concerned about: Media Influence Parental Influence Peer Pressure Teens’ Attitudes Sex Abortion Media Influence : Media Influence “Earlier this month, Time magazine put out a story about 17 girls in Gloucester, Massachusetts, none older than 16, who had made a pregnancy pact stating that they would get pregnant at the same time so they could raise their children together. The number of teen pregnancies in this school alone has risen more than 4% in just one year and the number of teen pregnancies across the country this past year are astonishing. One must ask, given the statistics, why are so many young girls getting pregnant?” Media Influence : Media Influence “ Most people are claiming that movies like Juno and Knocked Up are glamorizing pregnancy and young, unwed mothers. They are also pointing the finger at television shows such as the upcoming The Secret Life of the American Teenager, from the same people who brought you all thirty years (well it sure felt like it!) of 7th Heaven.” Parental Influence : Parental Influence Although many parents may want to “postpone” talking about sex to their teenagers, it is one of the best things that can be done for them. “The likelihood of becoming pregnant as a teen can increase if one's parents are inattentive, unloving or fail to instill moral values. The occurrence of adolescent pregnancy also corresponds to a breakdown in communication between parent and child.” Peer Pressure : Peer Pressure Many teenage females admit to having sexual intercourse in response to their boyfriend's desire for it. In fact, a 2003 Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that one in three young men aged 15-17 said they had felt pressure from male friends to have sex. Teenage Attitudes : Teenage Attitudes “An adolescent might become pregnant to satisfy a desire for unconditional love. A young girl might also become pregnant in an attempt to retain or win back a boyfriend.” Sex : Sex “Nearly half (46%) of all 15–19-year-olds in the United States have had sex at least once.” “By age 15, only 13% of never-married teens have ever had sex. However, by the time they reach age 19, seven in 10 never-married teens have engaged in sexual intercourse”. Abortion : Abortion Twenty-seven percent of pregnancies among 15–19-year-olds ended in abortion in 2006. The reasons teens give most frequently for having an abortion are concern about how having a baby would change their lives, inability to afford a baby now and feeling insufficiently mature to raise a child. As of January 2010, 34 states require that a minor seeking an abortion involve her parents in the decision. •Six in 10 minors who have abortions do so with at least one parent's knowledge. The great majority of parents support their daughter's decision to have an abortion. Some Good News:) : Some Good News:) Teen pregnancy and birth rates have dropped about 30% in the last 10 years •Fewer teens are having sexual intercourse •More sexually active teens are using contraception Conclusion : Conclusion Teenage pregnancies is a growing issue to be concerned about. It is not a game, or something that can be reversed, it’s life. Teens should be more educated about sex, pregnancies, diseases, and about being open and having a strong communication with those who surround them. Teen pregnancies can be prevented, be open and educated. You do not have the permission to view this presentation. In order to view it, please contact the author of the presentation.
