Pick-Resistant Locks For almost as long as locks themselves have existed lock picking has been an important skill. Not just for criminals but also for locksmiths to develop better locks that are harder to open and many civilians practice lock picking as a hobby in countries where lock picking tools are legal. For hundreds of years there’s been a low- intensity arms race between locksmiths and lock pickers. Within months of the latest secure lock being released lock pickers develop a new set of tools that can break in. While there are alternatives to old lock system electronic locks can be hacked into quite easily.

slide 2:

While all locks advertise themselves as lockpick resistant there are specialised locks that can make lockpicking or ‘bumping’ a lot harder than usual giving you or the police the much needed time necessary to apprehend the offender. There are 3 main brands of pick-resistant locks each employing a different method for use: The Medeco. The pin tumblers in this lock must not only be raised to a certain level they must be turned right or left or not turned at all in order to allow the key to turn. An effective set of bump keys would need to have several thousand variations of angles in order to turn the pins properly so that they could be bumped. Mul-T-Lock cylinders use a pin-within-a-pin principal. Since the keys are drilled to precise depths to operate the pin tumblers bump keys would be exceedingly difficult to make.

Another popular pick resistant lock is the Schlage Primus. This lock uses a second set of pins so that the key must do the job of 2 keys. This system is not quite as secure as the Medeco since the keys are similar within a geographical area. If a key bumper were to get the blank they could conceivably make a bump key that would work. These brands tend to be more expensive than the usual lock but your possessions can be stolen by anyone with some proficiency in lock picking. They can break in within a minute of starting to pick the lock and then you and your house are at the mercy of the burglar. Taking a risk on these kinds of things isn’t a wise venture.
