The guard said, “Twelve.” The member replied, “ Six.” and was let in. Another member walked up and the guard said, “Six” and the member replied, “Three.” and was let in. The man thought he had heard enough and walked up to the guard. The guard said, “Ten.” and the man replied, “Five.” but wasn’t let in.

There are 6 letters in the word twelve. And there are 3 letters in the word six. Even though it seems that the password is half than the given number, it’s the amount of letters in the number. So the man should’ve said three because there are three letters in the word ten.
