Our book group of American and British expatriots was discussing the book "The Devil in the White City" and it was interesting for us to see some photos and drawings of people that were in the book and you also had some more information on Holmes that Larson didn't include in his book. Holmes is definitely a worthy study for a class in Abnormal Psych! He was one scary guy! Saving..... Post Reply Close Saving..... Edit Comment Close Premium member Presentation Transcript H.H. Holmes : H.H. Holmes Ariel Thomas, Natasha Banks, Jason Smith, Joshua Smith, Jennifer Rice, Patrick Pearson Here’s the Facts : Here’s the Facts Number of victims: 27-230 Span of murders: 1888-1894 Country: U.S. and Canada State(s): Chicago, Illinois, Irvington, Indiana, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Toronto, and Ontario Date apprehended: November 17, 1894 What kind of kid would do that? : What kind of kid would do that? H.H. Holmes name was originally Herman W. Mudgett. He was born in 1860 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. His father was rich, but extremely strict on Holmes. Elementary, my dear Watson : Elementary, my dear Watson Mudgett was often bullied as a child. Mudgett claimed that when he was young he had a dreadful fear of doctor’s offices and the bullies immediately saw that as an opportunity. The bullies brought him into the doctor’s office to scare Mudgett, but once he was confronted with a human skeleton, he found himself fascinated by it. Slide 5: After this fascination was discovered, he began to capture and torture animals, sometimes even attempting surgery on them. In some accounts of his life… it even states that he killed one of his childhood playmates He went on to attend medical school and continued his hobby of torturing animals and, in some cases, small children. Holmes was married in 1878 to Clara Lovering, daughter of a rich farmer. Slide 6: Holmes used his wife’s inheritance to pay his way through medical school in Burlington, Vermont. He later transferred to the medical school at the University of Michigan where he dismembered corpses and buried them and made it look like they had been killed by accident. It starts… : It starts… While Holmes was in Chicago in the summer of 1886, he met a man named Dr. E.S. Holton who was dying of cancer. He persuaded Dr. Holton into letting him have a job at his drugstore and eventually purchased it from the Holtons’. After Dr. Holton’s death, Holmes murderedMrs. Holton and began telling people she moved to California. Slide 8: Holmes soon lost interest in the drugstore and purchased an empty lot across the street. He acted as the head architect and hired and fired many different crews, refusing to pay a cent for their labor. 1892 was the date of the completion of Holmes’ “Murder Castle” The Murder Castle : The Murder Castle The first floor contained various stores and shops. The second floor was home of his own personal office… along with many “rooms” for guests These rooms were equipped with gas chambers, “fire rooms” (or rooms that were lined with iron and equipped with a blowtorch), dissecting tables, and he even had his own crematory. All of the rooms were equipped with alarms that would go off if any of his prisoners tried to escape. Diagram of Holmes’ Castle : Diagram of Holmes’ Castle Slide 11: The basement, or, “The Chamber of Horrors,” was seven feet below the building. This was the location of: The dissecting table Surgical instruments Torture devices Various jars of poison …the way he did it : …the way he did it The Chicago fair was the main way Holmes lured most of his victims Many of his victims were unknowing young girls who were answering an ad that Holmes had put into the classifieds offering them a job. After the women answered the ads, Holmes made sure they kept the location of his mansion a secret and had taken out any money they had invested. Once he knew they were secured, they became his prey. Minnie Williams : Minnie Williams Minnie Williams was one of Holmes’ many victims. She met Holmes in 1893 and was under the impression he was a wealthy investor named Harry Gordon. Engaged to be married to Holmes, Minnie knew more about his multiple murders than anyone else did at that time. Slide 14: Nobody understands why she thought that she wouldn’t soon face the same fate that met all of his other victims. …she died in a botched abortion preformed by Holmes The Pietzel’s : The Pietzel’s Ben Pietzel was a man who partnered with Holmes in insurance fraud. …he never received his money, for Holmes killed him, then burned his corpse so badly that it was unrecognizable. Holmes then told Mrs. Pietzel that her husband had run away from her and she went on a search for him, leaving her three children with Holmes. Slide 16: He put the children and their mother in 2 different boarding houses and was arrested, alone, in Boston. He was not arrested for the insurance fraud, however, but a horse swindle that he and Minnie had done together. The police gave him a choice of going to Texas and being hanged for the swindling or staying where he was and admitting to the insurance fraud that eventually led to Ben Pietzel’s death. Slide 17: Of course, Holmes chose to admit to the insurance fraud. Carrie Pietzel was soon-after found in a home that Holmes had bought for her. Holmes lived with her until she started to question why he was digging a hole in the backyard. Police then realized he was digging her grave …the Pietzel children were still missing The unraveling of H.H. Holmes : The unraveling of H.H. Holmes In questioning, Holmes refused to say what happened to the three Pietzel children, Howard, Nellie, and Alice. It was later discovered that he asphyxiated Nellie and Alice by saying he wanted to play hide and seek, while they were hiding in a trunk, he stuck a rubber tube in it, which was attached to gas. Slide 19: In an Indianapolis townhouse, the remaining Pietzel child, Howard, was found burned alive in a stove. This evidence made the investigating officer, Frank Geyer, work even harder to put Holmes behind bars. FRANK GEYER The Final Straw : The Final Straw After discovering these murders, Geyer now had enough evidence to be able to search Holmes’ castle. There he found the horrors that Holmes had taken so much pleasure in. Things that were found in the castle : Things that were found in the castle Homemade gas chambers Burn rooms Rooms made airtight by closing the door A number of female skeletons A crematorium Ash and portions of bones Photographs A ball of hair from his many victims And a gigantic vat of acid ..this is how it ends : ..this is how it ends Before his impending death, Holmes met with 2 catholic priests and took communion. He refused to ask for forgiveness Holmes died on May 7, 1896 by hanging. It was said that he hung on the gallows for about 15 minutes before he died. Slide 23: “I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing– I was born with the “Evil One” standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world, and he has been with me since.” -H.
