SUNY Jamestown Community College Summer Undergraduate Research Institute JM Crisman, Ph.D.

Slide 2:

Vision: To create an environment conducive to scientific discovery at Jamestown Community College, whereby JCC students and professors engage collaboratively in the process of scientific research. Goals: To create a two-tiered scientific research course to enrich the scientific training of an academically diverse group of students. 2) To nurture and motivate students by introducing them to the thrill of scientific discovery with one on one faculty attention. 3) To develop in science students a 21st Century skill set, including how to act professionally and how to work as a team to achieve a common goal. 4) To train students in how to operate and communicate in a setting relevant to their chosen scientific discipline (e.g. laboratory vs field work). 5) To train students how to use scientific method, especially the process of generating scientific data and interpreting data quality. JCC SURI

Slide 3:

Some of the Challenges: culture kills vision every time class enrollment sizes -Have too few students Admin goes crazy -Have too many students Faculty goes crazy the students aren’t really ready Students lack time or maturity or technical expertise, or all of the above… -They need a support system and faculty attention

Slide 4:

Some of the Challenges: culture kills vision every time Here one day, gone the next one semester is never enough to train them Who the heck has time during the normal school year? Dealing with “Dr No” Some Faculty…”it can’t be done…”they’ll never give me adequate compensation” Some admins…”it’s not worth the cost”

Slide 5:

SURI 18-30 students PI #1 6-10 students PI #2 6-10 students PI #3 6-10 students Tier I Tier II Tier II Tier I Tier II Tier I JCC SURI

Slide 6:

Tier I- must develop “the right stuff” maturity, focus, academic or technical skills. - learn, communicate and assess data in context of techniques Tier II- more advanced academically - ready for the full experience - higher level of expectation

Slide 7:

Tier I can become Tier II next year Student Work Groups of 2 or 3 Why? -Millenials like group work -Research gps become study buddies -If one student doesn’t understand the other can help -Fewer projects for the PI to manage -Reduces the cost of supplies

Slide 8:

All students engage in: 1) a weekly 1 hr SURI colloquium to: -read and present papers -learn presenation skills -learn research basics 2) GLPs like record keeping, etc. 3) Group presentation at the end of the semester
