Slide 14:

THEY (THE MODIFICATIONS) ARE RESTRAINED BY PERSEVERANCE AND DISINTERESTEDNESS. (12) By Practice And Detachment These Can Be Stopped. 12

Slide 15:

PERSEVERANCE IS THE CONTINUOUS EFFORT TO SECURE PERFECT RESTRAINT. (13). Exertion To Acquire Sthiti Or A Tranquil State Of Mind Devoid Of Fluctuations Is Called Practice. (13)

Slide 16:

IT BECOMES FIRMLY ROOTED WHEN IT HAS BEEN HABITUATED FOR A LONG TIME, WITHOUT INTERRUPTION AND WITH SINCERE BELIEF. (14). That Practice When Continued For A Long Time Without Break And With Devotion Becomes Firm In Foundation. ( 14).

Slide 17:

DISINTERESTEDNESS IS THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF MASTERY IN HIM WHO HAS GIVEN UP THE DESIRE FOR PERCEPTUAL AND VISUAL OBJECTS. (15). When The Mind Loses All Desire For Objects Seen Or Described In the Scriptures It Acquires A State Of Utter Desirelessness Which Is Called Detachment. 15

Slide 18:

THAT IS THE HIGHEST DISINTERESTEDNESS, WHEN THE AWARENESS OF THE SEER RESULTS IN A DESIRELESSNESS (EVEN) FOR GUNA QUALITIES (AND NOT MERELY FOR EXTERNAL QUALITIES). (16). Indifference To The Gunas Or The Constituent Principles Achieved Through A Knowledge Of The Nature Of The Purusa Is Paravairagya (Supreme Detachment). 16

Slide 19:

UNDISTURBED FLOW COMES BY ROOT POTENTIALS Continuity Of The Tranquil Mind (In An Arrested State) Is Ensured By Its Latent Impressions. 10

Y S :

Y S By Practice and Detachment, these (the Fluctuations of the Mind) can be stopped

Bhagvat Gita :

Bhagvat Gita By Practice and Detachment, O son of Kunti, (the mind) can be controlled.

Secular Meaning :

Secular Meaning Practice means repetition of any action or thought. Detachment means to leave or drop a thought or action Eg. I order to earn money you practice the methods which would favour the achievement of objective and detach your self from factors which would act as hindrance.

Practice makes one Perfect :

Practice makes one Perfect

Relation between P & D :

Relation between P & D Practice denotes Acceptance Detachment denotes Rejection We accept what is favourable and Reject what is unfavourable The 2 are intermingled; when we accept what we like we have to reject what we do not like. These 2 have to be done simultaneously.

Abhyaasa :

Abhyaasa Abhyaasa is the exertion to acquire Sthitti or a tranquil flow if mind devoid of fluctuations. = practice at its highest. Repeated attempts to observe Yama and Niyama The highest Practice is the effort made to permanently stop the fluctuations of the mind.

How are spiritual activities hampered? :

Detachment :

Detachment Detachment means driving out those factors or developing a disinterestedness in respect of factors giving rise to such afflictions. Factors retarding progress are Kleshas.

Kleshaa :

Kleshaa Natural States of kleshas Dormancy Interruption Activity Attenuation is by effort Constant practice brings about a stage when the afflictions cease to torment the mind.

Slide 29:

The permanent dormancy is the highest stage one reaches by means of Practice and Detachment.

Detachment :

Detachment Is the feeling of apathy towards what has been an object of attraction. It is not at all possible to develop this feeling at once. It is gradual diminution of interest in the things of the world and in the life to come

Grades of Detachment :

Grades of Detachment Yatimaana Vyatireka Ekendriya Vashikaara

Yatimaana Vairagya :

Yatimaana Vairagya To disengage the mind from objects to which it is passionately attached. With sincere efforts the mind gradually disciplines itself to a detached frame in respect of some of the attractions.

(1) Striving: :

(1) Striving: A stage when the various morbid conditions of body and mind are recognized and we realize because of these toxins, the senses become overactive and one has excessive desires. The awareness of this is considered as the first stage so discriminative knowledge has arisen. The person is aware what is proper and what is not proper.

Vyatireka Vairagya :

Vyatireka Vairagya The mind learns to discriminate and finds out where its attachment has completely ceased where it is still lingering. The mind is aware of the lingering weaknesses and refuses to blink at them.

(2) Stage of Separation: :

(2) Stage of Separation: Here certain morbid conditions have been overcome so certain senses have been conquered.

Ekendriya Vairagya :

Ekendriya Vairagya The material thingscease to attract the sense-organs though a faint trace of attachment might still linger in the mind but not strong enough to reactivize them

(3) Single Internal Object: :

(3) Single Internal Object: One has completely mastered all outside senses. There is no fear of desire for external objects but even so the internal are there, like pride, prejudice and one's own recognition.

Vashikaara Vairagya :

Vashikaara Vairagya The last lingering trace is gone

(4) Final Stage or Mastery : :

(4) Final Stage or Mastery : here all types of ordinary desires have been overcome. One is full of discriminative knowledge. These divisions are done by junior, commentators. But this is still no where near the Nirodha stage. The mind does not stop functioning but has gained knowledge and may be still interested in it.

Is it feasible to assiduously cultivate Detachment in respect of each individual object? :

Is it feasible to assiduously cultivate Detachment in respect of each individual object? The five gross elements constitute the Universe and we are constantly being drawn to them If we resist their pull we will succeed in being detached. The count less objects press upon us through these five elements – earth, water, fire, space and eather

ITS ALL IN THE MIND :

ITS ALL IN THE MIND Attachment comes from the mind and so it is the mind which has to make the final decision to renounce.

Sacrifice :

Sacrifice In the worldly sense there are small and big sacrifice In the spiritual sense the sacrifice of Sankaracharya was the same as that of Buddha – in both cases it was sacrifice of land spread over a kingdom or a few square feet.

Slide 43:

It is better not to touch dirt at all than to make the body dirty and then cleanse it.

Enjoy today Renounce tommorow? :

Enjoy today Renounce tommorow? Renounciation is possible only if the mind even when engrossed in enjoyments subconsciously cherishes a hidden desire to rise above them some day and encourages that feeling to come up to the surface and preponderate. Enjoyment by itself never breed the desire to desist from it.

Satiety v/s Renunciation :

Satiety v/s Renunciation The latent impressions of pleasure are retained and lie dormant even when the sense organs are weary and inactive. They need to be countered by adverse impressions. Enjoyment is invariably followed by misery.

Sensitive :

Sensitive A Yogin devotes his entire energy to the study of ways and means which would lead to removal of misery. Minutest bit of a painful experience sets the Yogin’s mind thinking vogorously about the cause. The apparent pleasure of life which drive away other have no power to draw away his mind or swerve it.

Slide 47:

Sacrifice is a willing surrender of things which the mind desires to possess.

Anaathapindada :

Anaathapindada Buddha’s disciple came to Sraavasti with alms bowl soliciting ‘the supreme sacrifice’ for lord Buddha. Accepting the beggar woman’s single piece of covering she had was worth more than the portion of wealth from the piles of the rich.

Renunciation through enjoyment? :

Renunciation through enjoyment? During enjoyment if mind recollects earlier suffering that followed the enjoyment the idea of renunciation slowly creeps in and gradually gathers strength as the mind turns to recollect the rewarding experience of happiness which had followed renunciation as a consequence.

Renunciation of enjoyment. :

Renunciation of enjoyment. Physical enjoyment does not lead to a person turning inward

Pitfalls of Renunciation :

Pitfalls of Renunciation Desire for appreciation shows that Detachment is yet to be established.

Misinterpretation :

Misinterpretation As the Self is never changing it is not bound by dictates or prohibitions. To reach a stage beyond rules and regulations you have to pass through it. You cannot pick up an experience from a book or hearsay.

Middle path :

Middle path If all the time you think of what to renounce next there will be no peace. Liberation is neither the path of attachment nor of aversion. To uproot the sentiments of likes and dislikes you have to abide by certain dictates and abstain from others.

Slide 54:

Conceive the Absolute Knower who is the essence of Self, a totally disinterested witness to the goings-on around. Mind can conceive of this faintly at any stage but dwells permanently on it only in Samadhi.

IN the Mind only :

IN the Mind only Detachment do not relate to any outward manifestation. An aboriginal who possess only one piece of cloth as against Buddha who has three cannot be deemed as having ideas of renunciation. As he would fall for any good apparel shown to him but Buddha will not accept a fourth one.

Self-surrender of Christianity :

Self-surrender of Christianity It is of both the physical and mental. mentla includes faculties of connation and imagination which means that all the fluctuations of the mind have to be subdued. Here comes the need of Practice and Detachment.

Upanishads :

Upanishads The wise does not pray for the transient knowing its perishable nature. This is detachment when there is nothing to pray for. Thus the devotee attains desirelessness and concentrates on the Supreme Self succeeding in realising Brahman.

Slide 59:

If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don't. If you like to win but think you can't, It's almost certain that you won't.
