WHAT IS HOPE ??? A sentence used to express optimism. The speaker feels that something is possible.

Slide 5: 

WHAT IS WISH ??? A sentence is often used to express impossibility or improbability. The speaker wants reality to be different than it is.

Slide 6: 

EXAMPLE OF HOPE I hope that the lecturer will come today. (the lecturer will come) I hope that I will get better soon. (I will get better soon) I hope the dentist can see me now (the dentist will come)

NOTE SUBJUNCTIVE FORMS WITH WISH Wishes about past The tense : past perfect Time expression : past S + wish + (that) + S + had + past participle + . . . She wishes I had come earlier. Emily wishes she had a new car.

Wishes about present The tense : simple past tense Time expression : present S + wish +(that)+ S + were +. . . I wish that I were an actress. I wish I were staying in Japan now. I wish the dentist could see me now. (contrary to the fact)

Wishes about future The verb : would, could, were going to. S + wish +(that)+ S + would, could, were going to. + . . . I wish I would graduated next semester. Mr. X wishes he were going to win next week lottery.

Another example of hope and wish: We use wish to say that we regret something, that something is not as we like to be: I wish I knew Jane's telephone number (I don’t know it) Use the past perfect when you say that you regret something that happened or didn’t happened in the past: I feel sick. I wish I hadn’t eaten much. (I ate too much) Complain about the way people do something: I wish you wouldn’t drive so fast. It makes me nervous. Use wish when you want something to change or somebody else do something: I wish it would stop raining.
