The California Department of Education (CDE) calls RtI² a collaborative and responsive system to support success for every student. The CDE believes that RtI² is a systematic response to closing the achievement gap. RtI is Response to Intervention. It is a three tiered* academic system. RtI has become “squared” as it now includes a three tiered behavioral system. * Some districts may elect to follow a 4 tiered model.RtI defined:: RtI defined: The National Center on Response to Intervention (RTI) states that: Response to intervention integrates assessment and intervention within a multi-level prevention system to maximize student achievement and to reduce behavior problems. With RTI, schools identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes, monitor student progress, provide evidence-based interventions and adjust the intensity and nature of those interventions depending on a student’s responsiveness, and identify students with learning disabilities. ( www.rti4success.org )The basics: The basics RTI is a 3 tier or multi-tier system of interventions for academic and behavior needs of students in both general and special education. All students are screened to establish academic and behavioral benchmarks. This initial benchmarking provides a baseline for each student. T he data is used to identify those who are struggling with learning and behavior and who need additional support. The cornerstones of RtI are effective instruction, routine assessment, and regular data review. To better understand RtI, one must know what it is NOT meant to be.: To better understand RtI , one must know what it is NOT meant to be. RtI is not : special ed only something one person does to delay or deny referral of a student suspected of having a disability for a comprehensive evaluation.Below is a sample pyramid to illustrate the level of support provided with a 3 tiered model.: Below is a sample pyramid to illustrate the level of support provided with a 3 tiered model.Researchers and authors, Brown-Chidsey and Steege (2010), outline the 10 Steps to Address Learning and Behavior in their book, Response to Intervention: Principles and Strategies for Effective Practice. The authors note: although RTI will be a little different in every school, 10 key steps are essential for success: Implement scientifically-based instruction (SBI) Collect universal benchmark screening data Identify students at risk Provide small-group SBI based on student needs Monitor student progress monthly to weekly Review student progress data at regular intervals Revise instruction as needed and continue to monitor progress Review student progress to determine student response If student does not respond to intervention, refer for evaluation For students found eligible for special education, transition student to IEPMoving Forward: Moving Forward RtI implementation will take time, generally 3 to 5 years. RtI implementation will require planning, training and collaboration. This presentation is meant only as a introduction. Listed below are a few resources to get started with.
