Whole Class Read-Aloud 2. Silent Sustained Reading 3 . Buddy Reading 4 . Reading Journals 5 . Phonics StudyPArticipate: PArticipate Observed during the whole-class read aloud Go around the room and listen to individual students read their book quietly to me Observed during the buddy reading time I went around the room and discussed what the students were writing in their journals. Observed and took notes during the phonics lessonAnalyze: Analyze What does it mean to do literacy in this community? What are the literacy practices in this literacy community? How does one learn literacy practices?1. “Listen to Reading”: Whole Class Read Aloud: 1. “Listen to Reading”: Whole Class Read Aloud Class gathers on the carpet to listen and respond to a picture book read aloud by Ms. Vacchiano. The text is chosen by Ms. Vacchiano and she controls the text throughout the lesson. The students listen and participate when prompted by Ms. Vacchiano’s questions.Written Texts?: Written Texts? Ms. Vacchiano uses the whiteboard to write out different aspects of the reading Stops throughout the story to ask them about the story: Beginning, Middle, End Predictions Outside experiences2. “Reading to Self”: Silent Sustained Reading: 2. “Reading to Self”: Silent Sustained Reading The texts are leveled readers that the students add to their “Bag of Books” each week. No texts are written. Silent Sustained Reading for 30 minutes in which students control the text the entire time. Children get access to them through browsing and selecting the books from the bookshelves.Silent Sustained Reading: Silent Sustained Reading Choosing Books: Leveled Readers:3. “Reading to Buddy”: Buddy Reading: 3. “Reading to Buddy”: Buddy Reading Students choose a book from their “Bag of Books” to read to a partner. During this time, Ms. Vacchiano also takes certain students aside for guided reading….Guided Reading during “Buddy Reading”: Guided Reading during “Buddy Reading” Ms. Vacchiano uses a series of leveled books to give to her guided reading group based on their abilities. Both Ms. Vacchiano and the students control and hold the same text. Ms. Vacchiano directs their reading through asking questions about the text. Students read out loud and give their responses.
