Show of Hands How many of you have pressed every button on your camera just to see what it does? How many of you have read the manual that came with the camera? How many of you are satisfied 90% of the time with the pictures you get?

Getting to know the camera : 

Getting to know the camera Not all cameras have the same controls Your camera may have extra features or be missing some of the ones discussed in class. Your manual is the best way to familiarize yourself with the features of your camera.

Shutter Lag : 

Shutter Lag The time between when you press the button and when you take the picture. It can make the difference between getting the shot and missing the shot.

How to minimize lag : 

How to minimize lag Zoom all the way out to the widest angle on your camera. Press halfway to prefocus and calculate exposure. Watch the scene carefully and the back of your camera. Practice so you will have an idea of how long your camera takes to take a picture.

Getting Things in Focus : 

Getting Things in Focus Autofocus and it’s controls How does your camera indicate focus? Can you set the focus area? Cameras usually focus on the object closest to the camera. Some cameras can detect and focus on faces. Moving targets are difficult if not impossible to focus on.

Macro Mode : 

Macro Mode Macro mode allows you to focus on objects very close to the camera. Used mostly for flowers and bugs hence the flower logo.

Setting the ISO : 

Setting the ISO ISO is the sensitivity of the sensor in the camera. The higher the number the more sensitive the sensor. The higher the number the “noisier” the picture will probably be.

Homework Assignment : 

Homework Assignment Look at the menus on your cameras settings, read about them in the manual. See if you can set the focus point on your camera. Try to focus on something very close. Try focus and recompose.
