Shortly after that his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. Michael had two older brothers James and Larry, and one older sister Deloris and one younger sister Roslyn; his parents’ names were Deloris Brown his mom and James Jordan his dad. His family gave him companionship. His parents stressed to him to be honest and work hard at whatever he did. Michael’s first true love was baseball. Michael was a star pitcher on the baseball team and most of the players on the baseball team thought he was the best player on the team in little league. Slide 3: His brother inspired him to try to play basketball and his brother would always beat him badly at basketball. When Michael was older he got better at basketball and he would beat his brother at it. Michael even would pay his sister money to do his chores so he could practice playing basketball. Michael was going to try out for the varsity basketball team in the second year of high school. But the coach said that he wasn’t tall enough to play. The coach suggested that he could play for the other junior team but Michael thought the coach was wrong, so Michael played day and night playing basketball. Michael loved basketball so much that he forgot about high school. Michael would even skip classes to play basketball. After Michael’s parents found out about him skipping classes his parents told him that school comes first. Then he made a routine between basketball and school so he would divide it in two. He soon got a B average in high school and then he was able to play varsity basketball. Slide 4: Michael was a great basketball player and most of the colleges wanted Michael to be on their team. Michael went to the college called the University of North Carolina (UNC). UNC had a tradition of basketball. Michael was so happy because he got his basketball scholarship. Many people in his neighborhood thought that he wouldn’t be playing in college –at least his first two seasons. Michael did not know what was going to happen. He came into the gym his first day and saw James Worthy and Sam Perkins and got a little intimidated. But that did not stop Michael. He kept on practicing more than anyone on the team. Michael was always the one who would come to the practices first and to leave the practices last. And in Michael’s extra time he would play pickup games. Michael usually impressed the coach of the team, Dean Smith. Michael was one of the best on the team because Michael won their first championship of the NCAA because he got the last shot of the game. Michael was so good he was the rookie of the year when he was 19 (1982) and had 13.4 average points per a game. Slide 5: Michael won several awards in his 1981-82 season and in his 1983-84 season and the awards were called: ACC freshmen of the year (1982), ACC men’s basketball player of the year (1984), USBWA College player of the year (1984), Naismith College player of the year (1984), John R. Wooden award (1984,) Adolph Rupp Trophy (1984). In 1984 Michael entered the NBA and was on the Chicago Bulls team in the NBA. Michael was NBA rookie of the year in 1984-85. In 1985-86 Michael was a great basketball player on the Bulls but in his third game of the season Michael broke his foot and didn’t return until the end of the season. Michael won an MVP award of the NBA in 1988. Michael was also picked as one of the All-Stars of the NBA. And he also won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1988. In 1989 Michael got married when he was 26 years old to Juanita Vanoy. He had three children named Jeffrey, Marcus and Jasmine. Slide 6: Michael was Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year in 1991. In 1990-91 the Bulls won their first championship. Michael won one award of the NBA in 1991 called an MVP award. In 1992 Michael was called to be on the NBA All-Star team and he got an MVP Award of the NBA. The Bulls won their second championship in their 1991-92 season. In 1993, Michael and the Bulls won a three-peat (Michael and the Bulls won a third championship in a row). In October 1993, Michael surprised basketball fans by retiring from basketball. Michael was happy his dad saw his last game. But a month later, his dad had been murdered. Later in 1993-94, basketball started. Michael wasn’t around. He thought about his family and started playing professional baseball. But it didn’t go as well. He missed basketball. Slide 7: Later, in 1995 he wrote a note to the press that read “I’m back”. The Bulls were not on track. But they were just glad Michael was back. In 1995-96 Michael started the season with a record of 41-3. Michael’s average for scoring was 30.4. Michael was named finals MVP for a record of a fourth time, and beat Magic Johnson’s record of three times and also got called to be on the NBA All-Star team. The end of the 1995-96 basketball finals series was on Father’s Day and they won but Michael was sobbing in the locker room with the game ball and that was a memorable scene to him. Slide 8: In Michael’s 1997 finals series Michael had a bad game. They started the finals good but they were tied 2-2 in the series with the Utah Jazz team. But during the fifth game Michael felt that he was feverish and dehydrated and they found out he had a stomach virus after the game. Michael and the Bulls won their third game of the series. Then they won their fourth game of the series then he and the Bulls won their fifth championship. In 1997-98 Jordan and the Bulls had a record of 62-20. Michael got a fifth MVP award and got his third All-Star MVP Award and led the league with 28.7 points per game. On June 14, 1998, Michael and the Bulls won a second three-peat. Slide 9: Michael retired a second time on January 13, 1999. On January 19, 2000, Michael went back to the NBA on the Washington Wizards not as a player. He was the President of Operations for the Wizards. He got an ESPY athletes of the century award in 2000 also. Michael was the President of Operations in 2000 but Michael again returned as a pro basketball player in 2001, but he wasn’t a player on the Bulls. He was a player on the Washington Wizards. Slide 10: Michael retired a third time in 2002. On May 7, 2003 Michael got fired by the owner Abe Pollin as the President of Operations for the Washington Wizards. Since 2004, Michael owned a pro motorcycle road racing team. In 2006 Michael and his wife pledged 5 million dollars to Chicago’s Hales Franciscan High School.
