What is CALL?:

What is CALL? Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) may be defined as " the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning ". Levy (1997:1 An approach to language teaching and learning in which computer technology is used as an aid to the presentation , reinforcement and assessment of material to be learned, usually including a substantial interactive element. 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

What is CALL?:

What is CALL? Deals with the study of computer applications or computer technologies in second or foreign language teaching and learning ( Chapelle , 2001; Fotos & Browne, 2004; Egbert, 2005; Levy & Stockwell , 2006) 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

History of CALL:

History of CALL The term CAL I (Computer-assisted language instruction) was in use before CALL, reflecting its origins as a subset of the general term CAI (Computer-assisted instruction). An alternative term to CALL emerged in the 1980s, namely Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) , which was felt to provide a more accurate description of the activities which fall broadly within the range of CALL. 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

History of CALL?:

History of CALL? Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) was agreed upon at the 1983 TESOL convention in a meeting of all interested participants. This term is widely used to refer to the area of technology and second language teaching and learning despite the fact that revisions for the term are suggested regularly (Chapelle, 2001, p. 3). 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

Other Acronyms:

Other Acronyms Levy & Stockwell (2006): Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL), Network-Based Language Teaching (NBLT), Web-Enhanced Language Learning, Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for language learning, are listed under the banner of CALL. 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

Other Acronyms:

CALL - Computer-assisted language learning, sometimes expanded as computer-aided language learning CELL -  Computer-enhanced language learning: suggests the computer's role is to make learning better TELL - Technology-enhanced language learning: this accommodates more than just computers, often bringing in video and seeing the computer as just one part of a larger system. It is increasingly popular as a generic term TALL - Technology-assisted language learning: variant of CALL and TELL CALI - Computer-assisted language instruction: with "instruction" in it, it's more teaching oriented CBLT - Computer-based language training: views elements of language learning as "training" and tends to use an approach with definable, measurable objectives IT and ICT - Information Technology/Information and Communication Technologies are common acronyms outside of language teaching, particularly in Europe; sometimes this is presented as IT or ICT for LT (Language Teaching) NBLT - Network-Based Language Teaching: focuses on computer-mediated communication and the web Other Acronyms 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

Warschaure’s Phases of CALL :

Warschaure’s Phases of CALL Warschauer (1996) and Warschauer & Healey (1998) took a different approach, identifying three phases of CALL , classified according to their underlying pedagogical and methodological approaches: Behaviouristic CALL Communicative CALL Integrative CALL 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

Warschaure’s Phases of CALL :

Behaviouristic CALL: -conceived in the 1950s and implemented in the 1960s and 1970s. -the computer played the role of tutor . -serving mainly as a vehicle for delivering instructional materials to the learner. - Drill-and-practice programs were a prominent feature of this phase. Warschaure’s Phases of CALL 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

Warschaure’s Phases of CALL :

Warschaure’s Phases of CALL Communicative CALL: -became prominent in the 1970s and 1980s . the computer continued to be used as a vehicle for practising language skills, but in a non-drill format and with a greater degree of student choice , control and interaction . This phase included: Using the computer to stimulate discussion , writing and critical thinking. 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi

Warschaure’s Phases of CALL :

Warschaure’s Phases of CALL Integrative CALL : - marked by the introduction of two important innovations: Multimedia : Multimedia CALL began to make an impact in the late 1980s and was well established by the mid-1990s. The Internet. The earliest public manifestation of the Internet was in the 1970s, but it did not make a significant impact on CALL until the arrival of the World Wide Web in 1993. 2/2/2012 Dr. Hala Fawzi
