Virtual Team 36 presents: Rotary Storyland and Playland: Team Member Selection and Motivation and Image and Community Perception Presented by: Lauren Hajik Michelle Gonzalez-Orozco

Rotary Storyland and Playland:

Rotary Storyland and Playland Some facts to keep in mind…… Non-profit organization. Their Five Service Standards are Safety, Service, Image, Team, and Efficiency There are 25-30 seasonal employees between the two parks Currently, recruitment is accomplished through Craigslist and Bulldog Jobs Annual marketing budget is 35,000

Issues affecting Storyland and Playland:

Issues affecting Storyland and Playland Issue 1 Due to limited resources in labor costs, the parks have a challenge in recruiting and attracting applicants and motivating and recognizing the team members they do have Issue 2 Many members in the community have an outdated and inaccurate perception of Storyland and Playland

Issue 1: Team Member Selection and Motivation:

Issue 1: Team Member Selection and Motivation Give a Situational Judgment Test (SJT) during the interview process which basically would be a multiple-choice test putting the interviewee in certain scenarios with answers as to what they would do This test would then allow Storyland and Playland to weed out those applicants who would not be qualified and/or meet their standards

Situational Judgment Test:

Situational Judgment Test An example question would be as follows A customer angrily comes to you at the concession stand, where you are working, demanding a refund for the food they had purchased because he/she claims it was cold. What would you do? a. Raise your voice when talking back to him/her b. Calmly apologize and ask if you can exchange their food c. Tell him/her there will be no refund or exchange for any reason The correct answer is….

Issue 1: Team Member Selection and Motivation continued….:

Issue 1: Team Member Selection and Motivation continued…. Job security through a job placement program By doing this, Storyland and Playland could place their employees in other jobs during off-season This would be accomplished through a career fair, where Storyland and Playland would connect with other businesses who hire during the parks off-season and are in need of employees For example, retail stores hire in the winter for black Friday which is the day after Thanksgiving and for all the Christmas shopping

Issue 1: Team Member Selection and Motivation continued….:

Issue 1: Team Member Selection and Motivation continued…. Have a reward program in effect for team members The criteria for team members would consist of those who are enthusiastic, go above and beyond, have good work attendance, and have received many good customer comment cards Rewards would consist of free admission for the employee and their family to the parks, movie tickets, concert tickets, or gift cards to local restaurants Will boost motivation and increase good work ethics

Customer Comment Cards:

Customer Comment Cards The customer comment cards would be a small simple paper that they could fill out by putting the name of the employee, then circling an option of where they were at, Playland or Storyland, and circling an option like if the employee was helpful, kind, supportive to other employees, or respectful, the customer, in a sense, could be like a secret shopper. The customer can turn this in as they are leaving the park and an incentive for the customer could be that they get a discount on their next visit

Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries:

Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries The Five Guys restaurant has implemented and invested in a “secret shopper” program. Employees realize that any customer could be a “secret shopper.” Restaurant crew members receive additional pay for performing well for “secret shoppers”.

Issue 2: Image and Community Perception:

Issue 2: Image and Community Perception Local colleges with students majoring in film could develop media advertisements, such as a commercial, for Storyland and Playland Which could then be turned in to a competition amongst college students so that there is some kind of incentive for the students A monetary incentive, as well as, opportunity for an internship can be given. Students will also simply have the bragging rights of creating a local commercial. This would benefit the parks tremendously and would be very cost effective

Issue 2: Image and Community Perception continued….:

Issue 2: Image and Community Perception continued…. By having all team members from the parks wear more uniformed clothing, it would give the park a different, yet better, appearance. They could have many of the employees wear black pants and a white button-up shirt. Other employees, like ride operators could, at a minimum, wear matching polo shirts with khaki pants, like the picture shown to the right. In addition, character themed costumes would be a great addition to the parks. Families would be able to have their children take pictures with characters, making it fun for children
