It has 8,210,281 people, making it the 92nd most populated country in the world. There are nine states- Burgenland, Kaernten, Niederoesterreich, Oberoesterreich,Salzburg, Steiermar, Tirol,Vorarlberg, and Wein. History : History In pre-Roman times, Austria was occupied by many different tribes. After the Roman Empire fell, Austria was invaded by Bavarian and Slavic Avars. Charlemagne conquered this area in 788. Ottokar, the king of Bohemia, took Austria in 1252, but he lost it to Rudolf of Hapsburg in 1278. The Hapsburgs would keep Austria until World War I. In 1815, Austria emerged as the dominant power of the continent. History : History In 1867, the empire of Austria combined with the kingdom of Hungary. They were ruled by Franz Joseph I, until he died on November 21, 1916. The decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire began in 1914 when Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated. This also began World War I. (Infoplease) History : History In 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. Then in 1945, the Allies occupied Austria. In 1955, a State Treaty ended the occupation, recognized Austria as an independent country, and forbid Austria from unifying with Germany. The same year, a constitutional law declared Austria’s neutrality. This caused the Soviet Union to withdraw from Austria. History : History Austria entered the European Union in 1995. Then in 1999, they entered the EU Economic and Monetary Union. Austria also assumed a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council in January 2009. (World Factbook) Culture : Culture Their families are usually small and close knit with a certain town or village. Generally, weekends are devoted to activities with the family. They normally eat dinner together every evening. On Sundays, they visit grandparents and/or hike together. People are very proud of their homes, so they keep them neat and tidy. They do so also because this is the place where they relax. Culture : Culture They only invite their very close friends and family into their homes. If they live in a neighborhood, everyone must do their part to keep sidewalks, pavements, corridors, and steps clean. They are usually conservative people. The way they present themselves and the way they dress is very important to them. Sometimes they have strict dress codes, depending on the situation.
