Millennium Summit - Sept. 2000 Largest ever gathering of world leaders A series of goals to address extreme poverty & human rights Hope to achieve goals by 2015 Based on comparison of 1990 statistics to 2015 statistics Millennium Development Goals : Millennium Development Goals MDG #1: Eradicate Extreme Poverty & Hunger Reduce by half the people living on less than a dollar a day Achieve employment and decent work for all Reduce by half the people who suffer from hunger #2: Achieve Universal Primary Education Ensure that all boys and girls complete primary school #3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower women Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education #4: Reduce Child Mortality Reduce by 2/3 the mortality rate among children under 5 #5: Improve Maternal Health Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio Achieve universal access to reproductive health Millennium Development Goals : Millennium Development Goals MDG continued #6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS Achieve by 2010 universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all who need it Halt and begin to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases #7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability Reverse loss of environmental resources Reverse biodiversity loss Reduce by 1/2 the people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation Achieve significant improvement in lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers, by 2020 #8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development Millennium Development Goals : Millennium Development Goals How are we doing? Percentage in extreme poverty dropped from 33% in 1990 to less than 20% in 2004 Millennium Development Goals : Millennium Development Goals How are we doing? Enrollment grew from 80% (1991) to 88% (2005) Does not reflect whether children attend regularly and statistics not available in many conflict areas – more than 100 million children remain out of school Millennium Development Goals : Millennium Development Goals How are we doing? Slow increase but uneven results 46% of girls in the world’s poorest countries have no access to primary education 75% of the world’s illiterate adults are women Millennium Development Goals : Millennium Development Goals How are we doing? Reduced from 13 million to 9.7 million Millennium Development Goals : Millennium Development Goals How are we doing?
