Introduction : Blade servers are stripped down computer servers with a modular design optimized to minimize the use of physical space. Blade server saves space, minimize power consumption and other considerations. The blade architecture allows a number of servers. Network access for all server blades in a classes reduces cabling complexity and allows for relocation of server resources. The blade server reduces the cost and the working temperature. A server blade, along with storage, networking and other blades, are typically installed in a rack-mountable enclosure.

History : Developers first placed complete microcomputers on cards and packaged them in standard 19-inch racks in the 1970’s. Early models stored programs in EPROM and were limited to a single function with a small real time executive. The VME bus architecture in 1980’s defined a computer interface which included implementation of a broad level computer installed in chassis. PICMG expanded the compact PCI specification with the use of standard Ethernet connectivity. In February 2006, Blade.org was established to increase the number of blade platform solutions available for customers.

The blade shall be hot swappable. They use Pentium chipset. A blade server is sometimes referred to as a high-density server and is typically used in a clustering of servers that are dedicated to a single task.

Blade Memory: Blade shall contain a minimum Random Access Memory of 2GB and can be expanded to at least 8GB without requiring replacing the initial memory. Blade Random Access Memory (RAM) shall include an error correcting feature. The cache contains the data that is accessed most often the CPU and memory. The cache runs almost as fast as the processor.

Features: The Features of Blade server is mainly categorized as: Hot swapping During operation, electrical and mechanical components produce heat, which a system must dissipate to ensure the proper functioning of its components, it remove heat by using fans . Power The blade enclosure's power supply provides a single power source for all blades within the enclosure. Storage Depending on vendors, some blade servers may include or exclude internal storage devices.

Specifications on Blade : Blade chassis shall be 19" Width rack mountable and provide appropriate rack mount kit. Blade chassis shall support at least ten 1 height unit (1U) hot swappable Blades.

Configuration Expense s : The initial setup of a blade server network is typically a pretty complicated process, generally because each different manufacturer has their own brand-specific configuration settings and parameters. Unit Utilization  In order for a blade server to be properly utilized, each of the available blade slots in the server rack should contain a blade. Technology Advancements  With the rate of speed that server technology and technological hardware in general is advancing, the unit purchased may very well become obsolete within a period of five years.

Other Blade(s): Since blade enclosures provide a standard method for delivering basic services to computer devices, other types of devices can also utilize blade enclosures. Blades providing switching, routing, storage, SAN and fiber-channel access can slot into the enclosure to provide these services to all members of the enclosure.

Ordinary Vs Blade Server(s) : Regular server or a personal computer or a laptop includes at least a mother board, processor, memory, hard drive, keyboard, display, network adapter, video card, and power supply. Conclusion : Blade servers are an important new technology that promise unheard of levels of data center device density. Given the right management tools, it should be possible for the data center manager to move into a more strategic role. It's entirely likely that vendors will want to lock users into their specific products. This is pretty much the model that exists in the telecom world, but is masked by the fact that single-vendor telecom networks are common.
