Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide 2: GO-Science is a publically supported social enterprise that provides informal science education experiences to the general public. We have been providing outreach services to 29 counties in Eastern, NC for over 10 years. GO-Science is a part of the official Redevelopment Plan as approved by City Council and we have been working diligently towards the establishment of a science center in Greenville, NC. Who is GO-Science? What are our major programs? : What are our major programs? We currently have five major programs: Portable Planetarium Outreach Program Summer Science Camp International Year of Biodiversity Science Café NanoDays What is a science center? : What is a science center? Science centers connect people with science. Science centers give science a presence in the community and offer people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to ask questions, discuss, and explore. Science centers provide firsthand experience and an opportunity to develop intuitions about the natural world. Science centers encourage curiosity. Exhibits that are beautiful or surprising—or even funny—can encourage visitors to approach new phenomena and ideas. What are the impacts of a Science Center? : What are the impacts of a Science Center? Educational Enhancement Keystone Destination Economic Development Workforce Development We contribute to neighborhood redevelopment. Our organization is an educational resource. We promote research and innovation. We offer opportunities to diverse sectors of the community. A science center provides a meeting place. We are a source of pride for the local community. What is our progress? : What is our progress? Over time the organization has made the following progress: Acquisition of a 1.5 Million Dollar Challenger Learning Center Simulator Accepted as a member of NC GSMC Acquisition of 875K Dollars Worth of Exhibits Hiring of an Executive Director 1st Telescope Making Workshop in North Carolina One of only 11 UN Partners in the United States. Location identified for science center development. Former Pugh’s Tire Site : Former Pugh’s Tire Site Approximately 8,000 sq. ft. of space with dedicated parking available in front and in back with city street parking available. Front façade enables the facility to be expanded to 10-12K sq. ft. over time. High ceiling (15-20 Ft.) and lift gate doors in back enable for installation of current and future exhibits. Why This Location is Ideal : Why This Location is Ideal Centrally located with easy access from the West Greenville Community, East Carolina University, The City Center, and Central Greenville. Close to the Library, Art Museum, and Theater. Located in a block poised for both private and public development and redevelopment. Near-term developments will increase foot traffic. New cross-city linkages in this corridor. How will the space be used? : How will the space be used? GO-Science is using a multi-phase approach towards the use and development of this facility. Phase I Using currently available 2800 sq ft. of space. Our Living Planet / Tornado Exhibit Planetarium Hands on Programming Phase II : Phase II Use of service bay area and warehouse activated. Health Exhibit Developmental Learning Area (ComfyLand) Traveling Exhibits Phase III : Phase III Capital addition and reorganization of exhibit space.
